Q: MacBook Pro will not go to sleep.

Whenever I updated to Maverick my macbook pro will not go to sleep I have to shut it down all the way then boot it back up.  Is this common with this new OS?

MacBook Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9)

John, its been a while .... to be honest none of this helped and I have been using my desktop PC instead ( i know the horror ) most of the time because of this annoying ( not sleep ) thing. But I wanted to reply back to you to see if there could be anything else to do...

Note you have TMLoginMgr launching twice at login.

I hope you have some other backup plan in place. Your hard drive will fail, often around the three year point and it looks like it might be at about that point now.

Please post the results of pmset as I wrote in my original reply, repeated here for convenience:

It may be instructive to identify the actual process that is preventing sleep. The following instructions can be used with any OS X version.

    • Open Terminal and Activity Monitor. Both are in your Utilities folder. Leave them open.
    • Open System Preferences > Energy Saver, and set the Mac to sleep after the shortest possible idle time (one minute)
    • Wait a minute, during which you touch nothing
    • When it becomes obvious the Mac will not sleep, type the following in the Terminal window, followed by the Return key:

    pmset -g

    • Look for the line resembling the following:

sleep     1 (sleep prevented by 360)

    • Note the process ID (360 in the above example). Mavericks will indicate the process name directly.
    • In Activity Monitor, select Window > Activity Monitor, and select the CPU tab. Click on the column with the heading "PID" to sort processes by their process ID. Find the Process Namecorresponding to the PID above.

That will be the process that prevented sleep.

I've had this problem a few times now.  The cause in my case seemed to relate to Flash Player (Safari Internet..)  The way I first noticed it was an issue is because I opened Activity Monitor and Flash was Hogging 1.4 GB of Real Memory.  So I quit the process and just like normal my MBP went to sleep as it should.  However even after restarting Safari and then the computer itself, Flash no longer worked properly so I had to reinstall an update.  After that it worked fine for several weeks.

It just happened to me again and so I automatically Quit Flash in the Activity Monitor and then restarted Safari.  Everything worked normal after that.

Something seems to be going on with the Flash Plugin.  This thread is several months old since anyone has posted, but if anyone else runs into the problem, try the Flash Removal solution.   To view most any videos nowadays we need Flash so you'll need to restart Safari if you Quit the process.  If you have a corrupted Flash like I did the first time, a simple reinstall and restart should do the trick.  Hope this helps someone.
