No you have to keep the project. All images in Aperture have to be in a project. Albums just contain pointed back to the project(s) for the image(s) they contain.

See The Well-Trod Path: a Beginner's Guide to how Aperture's major parts inter-relate for information about the various parts of the Aperture library.

Well you can put the projects in a folder or multiple folders depending on how you want to set up your library.

How do you now have your projects setup? What do they represent for you? For me I have one project for each days shooting and then each project is in a month folder and all the month folders for the year are in a year folder. So I can expand and collapse what  I see.

Others setup their projects differently, say a project for a client or for a particular job.

If you have a long list of projects you need to rethink how you have the library setup.

    regards

Move your projects into a hierarchical structure of folders, so you can get them out of the way by collapsing the folders.

right now i have 1 project...but it had over 1000 photos..first time use..i dumped a folder for pics from last few months.

from that i created albums by event.

    moving forward...

i can set a project for each month or year? and sub folder all new projects during that shooting timeframe?

also--can i move contents of a project to another project?

Take the time to think about how you will use Aperture.  Léonie just posted an excellent overview of this here.

We hear all time from user's complaining that something they've encountered should not happen in a "Pro" application (I am _not_ referring to you) -- as it turns out, you've stumbled on one of the things that _is_, imho, a great part of a "Pro" app:  it's a kit in a box, not an assembled appliance.  You get to build the appliance you want.

Take the time to do this right, now, and Aperture will become a robust Transformer/Leatherman.  (Don't take the time and you'll likely end up with some kind of sprawling Tinkertoy.)

    Here is what I do.

    Good luck.  Ask away.

    --Kirby.

Yes, not a problem just select the image or images in the source project and drag them to the destination project.

I recommend you set up a new library as a playground. This way you can try out all the different commands and setups and not worry about losing anything. If it gets hopelessly messed up delete it and start again.

Once you are comfortable switch back to your real library. Also make backups an integral part of your workflow from the beginning. Nothing is a liberating as knowing that no matter how much you mess up you can always recover everything.
