Although AirDrop is listed in my iMac's sidebar, when I tap Airdrop on my iPhone5 to send a sound file to my iMac which is inches away, nothing happens. Did I miss a step? Is my AirDrop activated the way it should?

The AirDrop on iPhones is between iPhones.

Fastest: Drag and drop the attachment to your iTunes icon in the Dock.
Slower Windows method: save it to your Desktop, then import it from there into iTunes.
Voice Memos is on the iPhone.
I assumed that you emailed it to your Mac and that you wanted to get it into iTunes.
I can't guess what you're doing unless you actually tell me.

I suggest that you re-read the posts. Everything was covered.
Email the voice file to your Mac, drag and drop the attached mail file to the iTunes icon in your Dock.

Late to the party but to answer your question those instructions are for a future systems revision to enable Airdrop between iOS and OSX. Again, and as we've mentioned, Airdrop currently only functions between iPhones. This will change in the future to include OSX however.
