Help Remote not working at all!

I just got a new apple tv we bought it about a month ago brand new but didnt open it till now because it was a wedding anvierrsary gift. Anyway I Plugged it in and nothing is happing when I click on the remote. The light does not flash nor did trying some of the other suggestions i have read online as far as trying to unpair or pair back up again. I still do need to try replaing the battery. But lets just say that doesnt work then what can I do?
