My OS is Version 10.6.8 and the machine is about 3 years old. My machine gets the automatic updates. I have 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 2GB 1067 MHz DDR3. My computer usage is low, generally mundane and I don't have much of any apps running. My disc is 62 GB and I use about 26 GB of that. I have not done any upgrades outside of what my automatic updates do.

Well provided, thank you. I suspect an increase to 4GB memory would be useful although it should be OK as it is with the usage you describe. There have been reports of a heat problem with 4GB.

Here are two documents dealing with your problem. The first is by a much respected regular contributor to the forums, Thomas Reed.

The Safe Mac » Mac Performance Guide

The second by a well known service for Macs,

Tuning Mac OS X Performance

Lot of reading but they cover almost every aspect of the problem.
