MBP screen suddenly distorted/froze

My MBP screen distorted suddenly, as if it had frozen but the picture changed rather than just froze. It has happened a few times in the past but normally I can just reboot it and its fine. This time it happens each time I reboot it straight after loading without me getting the chance to do anything. The distortion is usually green with what ever is left from the picture on the screen.
