Q: I downloaded OS X Mavericks over the weekend and it has made my Macbook Pro extremely slow

I downloaded OS X Mavericks over the weekend and it has made my Macbook very slow. Browsing has become slow. Mail hardly moves. It takes ages to show contents of inbox, yes including previously downloaded emails too. Thus the overall experience is very disappointing. IS THERE A WAY TO GO BACK TO THE PREVIOUS OS X that I had? OS X Mavericks should be renamed as OS X HAVOCKWRECKS.

I could find the file, "jp.co.canon.UFR2.BG.plist"

However instead of deleting it, how do I go about finding the app to uninstall this file?

Is there a way to check which app/utility is the one to be uninstalled for a particular file that is causing problems?

That would be great if there were a simple way to tell what app is installing a particular bit of software. Unfortunately there isn't. This one is probably related to some canon software that you installed at some point. You'll just have to look through your Applications folder and in your Library. Another thing to do is a browser search, for example, search for "jp.co.canon.UFR2.BG.plist  remove" and I'm sure somebody out there will have tried to get rid of it at some point.

The .plist files are handled differently in Mavericks- they are cached, and it seems that they have to be removed from the cache as well. I don't think anybody outside of Apple quite understands how this is done just yet. I have made some inqiries about this and I'm awaiting an answer.

does it mean that the uninstall is not working given that the uninstaller program & the installer program continue to exist even after running the uninstaller program?

No. The uninstaller won't remove the installer or the uninstaller (itself). That is boggling my mind somewhat: the uninstaller uninstalling itself. If you are done with the uninstaller, you could just put it in the trash and it should be gone. And if you don't use your Blackberry anymore you could just put the installer in the trash and empty the trash and it should be gone too.

I would definitely get rid of the rimalbumart demon as it's running away with your memory and your CPU. Here's a thread that should help: Remove "RimAlbumArtDaemon": Apple Support Communities

I would uninstall what you can, then reboot, and see how your computer behaves. If it is working well despite a few suspicious items still being present, then perhaps it's better to just leave those there for now. But get rid of the rimalbumart thing.

    Arthur,

Few developments since i uninstalled/deleted a few things as per your recommendations based on the Etresoft: Etrecheck report threw up :

    1) Opening Excel for mac 2011 is a day long activity. The entire system also gets hung at times when Excel doesn't open. Trying to quit the application also is a vain attempt(I have to use force quit many a times to exit Excel).

    2) All the excel files I receive & send come with an icon of Excel for Mac 2008 though I send & get to open 'em in Excel for Mac 2011.

    3) Excel for Mac 2011 shows an "upgrade" option but when I click on it & it asks for a product key & i enter the one I got when I bought office for mac 2008, it doesn' accept and says "invalid product key". Does this mean that the upgrade is ONLY for those who PURCHASED office for Mac 2011 & not for those who got a free upgrade by virute of their purchase of Office for Mac 2008? I hope not because when I went to register online the Office for mac 2008, it takes me to a page that says "Thank you for purchasing Office for Mac 2011".

    4) I got rid of the rimbalbum art thing. And also the jp.co.canon.UFR2.BG.plist. However when I try to print a document on the Canon printer, it says "Filter failed".

Could you advise me on how to get my Mac running as fast as before or faster given we have OS X Mavericks? I am demotivated as these issues are taking away my time from work. Please help !!

    Thank you,

    Warm Regards,

    N.Vishwanath

    1. I can empathize re: Excel. Just the thought of using Microsoft products makes me feel sick. Bill Gates will be remembered for being one of the best human beings ever (for his philanthropy) and the worst (for his software). I don't have much to offer other than to report that I had an issue earlier this year with an Excel workbook that for some reason suddenly ballooned in size up to many megabytes, for no good reason. I think I fixed it by duplicating it and using the duplicate instead.
    2. I'd try uninstalling every canon printer utility that you have and uninstalling all the canon drivers. Then just reinstall the driver and use the print dialog in whatever app you are in. If that doesn't work try downloading the latest printer utility from Canon.
    3. Could you post a new etrecheck report so we can compare.
    4. If you haven't already, maybe a clean install would be effective. Takes some time but it might be worth it.
    5. You might think about putting in more RAM or a SSD, depending on what you are doing with your mac. 4 GB of RAM is really a minimum for Mavericks. I got tired of the SBBOD (the spinning beachball of death), which made using Excel even more of a hellish experience. I put in a SSD and no more beachballs.

Guess I didn't see your latest reply before I posted the latest report of Etresoft. Few quick follow questions Arthur:

    1) How does one go about putting more RAM Or SSD? What's SSD by the way? Here in India, I just can't trust any "authorised" resellers of Apple.

    2) How do I go about uninstalling the canon printer/driver & reinstalling it? just delete the canon printer for now? and then add it again?

Sorry I know these could be elementary questions for you but I am having a tough time working around these issues !! Many thanks in advance, Arthur !!

Both are pretty easy to do yourself, if you have some facility with a little screwdriver. There are a lot good pictorial and video guides on the web.

Not sure about what to do in India about getting additional RAM or an SSD. Can you just mail order from a reputable source?

You still have the 3 startup items installed & RIM software. Canon's printer driver is just broken still.

I'd normally take time to explain however since you have failed to execute the last lot of advice I'd simply suggest you backup, reinstall the OS & manually move your user data back to the machine - you will need to reinstall all you apps, as arthur mentioned.

I'll add the regular EtreCheck notes below, frankly your Mac sounds like it needs a reinstall. If you have a backup of 10.8 or earlier it would be easier to reinstall that, otherwise read on…

    Cleanup:

All the usual caveats apply, backup before you modify the system, delete the items (or move them to another disk or folder if you are worried about deleting the wrong thing) but ensure the originals are gone or updated.

Use the Finders "Go menu > Go to Folder…" when you need to open the hidden ~/Library (your users library).

Reboot for the system changes to take effect.

    How to find updates:

The critical launchd jobs & kernel extensions use reverse domain notation e.g.

com.logmein.hamachi.plist means look at http://logmein.com for updates (if you don't recognize it removing it may be appropriate)

In short: You want to try to update or remove all the system level items.

    Startup Items: Stored in /Library/StartupItems/

Startup Items have been discontinued by Apple since Mac OS 10.4. They are responsible for making changes at a system level. Remove them all or spend time ensuring ALL related software is up to date. You need a very good reason to have anything installed in here. The developers are ignoring Apple guidelines by installing these - not a good sign.

    Kernel Extensions: Stored in /Library/Extensions/

Kernel Extensions also load third party code, but they insert it into the 'core' of the OS. These can be safe, however you must ensure the related tools or apps are up to date, otherwise the system is basically built upon quicksand. Remove them all & see if the OS works better.

    Launchd jobs: several types

    LaunchAgents          - Stored in /Library/LaunchAgents

    LaunchDaemons       - Stored in /Library/LaunchDaemons

User LaunchAgents   - Stored in ~/Library/LaunchAgents

These are all background jobs, they are not necessarily bad, but if they are loading old code it could be doing untold damage to the performance & stability of the entire OS. Focus on the System level jobs (the ones inside /Library - the system level) also remove ['failed'], non-system jobs.

EtreCheck gives a status on launchd jobs…

    [loaded]                  - a running job

[not loaded]            - jobs that are set not to run, basically harmless, remove them unless you plan to use the associated software (if it is up to date)

[failed]                    - jobs in a crashed or unknown state, it could be forking processes or using all the system resources, remove these.

    User login items:

Applications and helpers that are managed inside 'Systems Preferences > Users and groups > Login Items tab'.

These are loaded at the 'User level', consider removing all of them whilst you troubleshoot.  When you decide to re-add them ensure the software is up to date.

    3rd Party Preference Panes: & Internet Plug-ins:

    /Library/PreferencePanes/ and ~/Library/PreferencePanes/

    /Library/Internet Plug-Ins/ and ~/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/

Once again these items all must be up to date, or remove them from your system. If the prefpanes manage additional software use the uninstaller or see the developers site for uninstall instructions. You can also right click to remove 3rd party preference panes in System preferences

Read the list of Internet plug-ins carefully, there are often duplicate Flash player versions that won't help stability, it's just wasted space too.

Don't forget to also update Safari's extensions in it's preferences (if you have any).

Re-run EtreCheck after cleaning up to see if items have returned (some apps will reload the background jobs when re-opened, so either update or remove the software).

Hope that isn't too daunting, the OS should be better if there are less old items running at the system level.

Should have said I am on  OS X 10.9.1 (13B42)

I also followed advice from various posts by Andy Ball, Drew Reece and Arthur,  and got rid of loads of old launch agents etc and the speed did improve.

Sorry Drew, just saw your reply to this post MONTHS after you had posted your reply. Being a Sunday I decided to see if there are any updates on the last post. Since a lot of time has elapsed, I will run Etrecheck & repost the report it throws. Then maybe you guys could give me an updated advice. Thank you all.

You have not removed the BlackBerry software (BB), and there is no Blackberry software compatible with Mavericks.

Remove it correctly (go to the BlackBerry website and locate the instructions for removal, there may be an uninstaller available there)

    Do you need Paragon NTFS?

The RealPlayer Downloader agent should be removed from Login items.

Do you use a Huwaei modem?

One last thing: You still have something crashing.

    Hi !

Thanks. I saw some blackberry items despite me having uninstalled Blackberry Application using the official Blackberry uninstaller long ago. In any case I deleted all files having a prefix of "rim" or any word with "blackberry" in it. Most of them were in preferences.  I use the Huwaei Modem when the internet via the wireless router at my home/office ain't working.

Interestingly I saw that in Login Items there was also a Blackberry application which deleted off from there like the Real Player Downloader agent.

I uninstalled the Paragon NTFS but the disk image related to this ain't getting deleted after uninstalled Paragon NTFS.

How do I go about fixing the 22% Report Crash Usage by the CPU ?

    Thanks,

    Vishwanath.
