iMac/Macbook Pro boot issues 10.8.5 (iTunes?)

Currently several systems are having trouble booting into the OS. Suspect latest iTunes update.

Symptoms are :

System chimes, apple logo is shown, mouse cursor shows briefly, pinwheel shows. No further movement.

Shut system down with power button held. Start system again. Sometimes it now boots, sometimes this step needs to be repeated.

Nothing of note in boot log. (same items are seen with a normal boot)

All of the affected systems are running 10.8.5 and all of the latest updates.

Disk utility -> Permission repair gives 100+ items in the iTunes location with permission problems (constantly) other items of note are Safari permissions and one for Ruby (also consistant on all systems showing the problems)

Currently about 30+ systems reported with this problem.

Any ideas? Or a known issue?

Aditional notes - Attempts to start up in diagnostic mode fail (just white screen), netboot with affected systems does work. Safe boot also seems to work everytime.

Once the OS does finally boot again a message stating that the system was shut down due to a problem appears.

Different memory has been tested, same result.

Once booted system runs fine. Shutdown however does seem to take a while.

Judging by the ammount of views this post has had I am not the only one with this problem. I also see other threads with the same issues.

There seem to be many theories about why this is happening. It also seems with a lot of patience that finally the log in screen does appear. 10-15 minutes of waiting.

Theories so far -

iTunes (other than the annoying permission problems I do not see why this would cause this issue)

Java 7,45 (Happens even without this version of Java on the system)

Camera RAW update (Even though it seems unlikely this is the most recent update that might have caused this issue).

No action so far from Apple on this one and it seems to have the experts stumped also, Hopefully 10.8.6 will be out soon with a fix, now 50+ systems with this problem and rising. We are not ready yet to upgrade to 10.9.x so the preferred option is not to have to be forced to upgrade.

Thank you Eric for your reply.

Unfortunately the items you mentioned have all been tried, without any change.

The local Apple store has also ran into a lot of systems with these problems and their only solution is to re-install the system. (something I have not run into since my days of running only Windows).

With currently 50+ systems with this issue this is obviously not a workable solution.

Luckily not all of my users have updated to 10.8.x or at least not to 10.8.5, I have not seen these problems on any other version/subversion of OS X.

If anyone has run into this issue and has a working solution please do let me know. My Apple supplier would also be very happy.

A side note - for the 3rd day running I have not had this problem, not that I believe it to be solved yet, I also had a 3 day run last week of being able to start my system normally.

With slight excitement I saw another update today for the Camera Raw drivers, hoping that this would undo the damage of one of the previous updates (It is either iTunes or the previous Raw package). No such luck...

Judging by the amount of views there are many others with this problem (if they haven't been forced yet to re-install or upgrade to Mavericks to solve it themselves). I have also seen many other similar discussions (here and elsewhere) with this issue so I am surprised to see that there is yet to be some acknowledgement from Apple regarding this problem.
