External drives can't be found

I have 2 WD Elements external HDs, connected to my AirPort Extreme using a powered USB hub. Since I connected the second one, I have noticed that Finder has begun to take longer and longer to open both drives, not to mention transfer files from one HD to the other. One of the messages I have been getting tells me that my Airport Extreme doesn't exist or can't be found. It obviously exists because I can connect to the internet, but I can't get to either of my HDs.

Is there a better, more reliable way to connect multiple HDs to my MacBook Pro?

MacBook Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9)
