Moved iPhoto library to an external drive now really slow

My library is now on an external 1T connected by fire 800, it responds extremly slow and shuts down at times. Can not find my photos to use for desk top picture or screen save like I did before.

I have a 2008 imac, with 6g ram, 320hd with over 212g free. I have over 250g pictures, that is why I moved then to the external drive.

Iphoto 11 (9.4.3) on Lion 10.7.5

Do I have to live with this? How to do it better? Do I just need to upgrade my IHD to fit all the photos?

iMac, Mac OS X (10.7.5)

As a test launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and create a new, test library on the EHD. Import some photos and test to see if the same problem persists. Does it?

I am still scrolling over all the pictures to see if they will load, it takes a long time from them to come into focus

I put a new library on the internal HD and it loaded fast, then I put a test one on the external and that was very slow. I think they need to be on the internal HDD, I am going to look at putting in a bigger HDD in the computer.

Plug the drive into another FW port on your Mac.

If no improvement run some checks on the EHD with Disk Warrior and Disk Utility. There's no reason a library shouldn't run fast on an EHD.

If you can backup what's on it now do so and reparition the drive to 1 partition which will erase the drive and reformat it. Then bring back your files and try running a library from it again.

Moved everything to another external drive, worked like normal. Tried to repair the other drive, unable to fix had to rreformat, putting the library bcak on the reformatted drive will se if it is still useable. If not have to get a new exHDD.
