Bose Sound Docks are no longer compatible with Apple iPhones or iPods?

When plugging my iPhone 4S or 5, or my iPod 3rd Gen or 7th Gen into my Bose Sound Dock, I recieve a message that reads, "This iPhone/iPod is not compatible with this accessory" and will not play stored music.

Background Info:

- The Bose Sound Dock was designed to support Apple products.

- All software/OS on the Apple products is current as of Dec 2013.

- The Bose product doesn't have update-able software associated with it.

- Clearly, something has changed with the Apple products.

What can be done to fix this so that iPhones and iPods will play again on Bose products?

I've unplugged/replugged the Bose Sound Dock, and I've powered down and powered up the Apple products expecting that something would reset, but these steps have proved to be ineffective and nothing has changed.

iPhone 4S, iOS 7.0.4, Also applies to iPhone 5, iPod 3rd

I just updated my iPhone 4s to the latest version (7.1.2) and did so through the computer and iTunes, not via wifi. Still no luck. The two iPhone 4s we have in our house do not work on the Bose but all other older devices working on older iOS versions work fine (iPhone 3G and 1st gen iPod touch...sad my 1st gen iPod works better than my iPhone 4s). I've even contacted Bose who emailed me back saying they are not aware of any issues with iOS7 and to try a hard reset...like I didn't try that already. I find that hard to believe with the amount of forums out there on this topic. I'm surely not the first to contact them.

I solved my issue with my iPhone 6 telling me "accessory not supported" error when docking to Bose system

If your "Music" app was open whilst you were attempting to dock your iphone to Bose system, try these steps:

1. undock your iphone

2. manually close the app

3. redock

Similar connection problem happened also when I tried connecting my iphone to my PC to manage my music inventory with my music app running. Closing the music app first before connecting to PC always solved the problem. It seems connection problem with Bose system is a similar one as well.

I played both my shuffle and iPhone 4 yesterday successfully with the Bose dock

I connected them both to my computer and iTunes to download some new music this morning.

Now NONE of them including my iPhone 5 play at all

The message says 'this accessory is not supported' and also appears to no longer be charging them.

Surely Bose has some sort of agreement as this is ludicrous ... ?

I am glad I bought it in Peter Jones as now it is not 'fit for purpose' however Bose / Apple should be on to this immediately.

CazMac - thanks for the support. Good to know that this issue isn't unique. I called Apple, and they tried to defer the issue to Bose. After telling them that the Bose configuration didn't/couldn't change, they indicated no knowledge of why it happened. Clearly Apple doesn't intend to do anything about this until more people complain. Let's hope that it is soon.

Hi Just bought Bose II and my iPhone 4S 7.0.4 is unsupported as well. Quite frustrating for me as I live on an island 2400km away from the shop I bought it from so impossible to take back. How do you complain to Apple that the update has caused the issue? I'd only just updated the phone whilst I was on the mainland because our internet is too slow to do it at home and my phone worked perfectly before on the exact same model Bose that my friend owns, so I know it is the update that caused it.

QueenDK and Clarkepa - I discussed this issue with a senior Apple Tech this past week with no positive results. I know that I at least captured his interest in that I presented him with a problem he couldn't solve. He invited me to call him back, and so I will do so this Sat (Dec 21st). One way or the other I will post the results, but am hopeful that we can develop an answer that restores use of the Sound Dock, or at least will cause Apple to recognize this mistake and develop a fix. More to follow...

Ok, I was having the same issue which is why I came across this post (in search of an answer). I MAY have figured it out...I have an iPod, don't-remember-what generation, and it has always worked with my Bose sound dock portable speaker, approx 2-3 years. Anyway, a few months ago, the Bose stopped picking up that I "docked" my iPod onto it. A long while has gone by and we haven't done anything about it bc our speaker was out of warranty and didn't want to spend the $100 it costs to repair (thru Bose, don't know about other places $, but I've learned the hard way to stick to manufacturer for high-end brand device repair). Long story short, we really missed using our speaker outside and I decided to send it in instead of buying a new one (new one-year warranty comes with the repair, so I figured it was $100 cheaper than buying a new one). An added note, we tried putting my husbands iPhone 4S on the dock and it didn't read it, either; the Bose didn't charge either device, didn't acknowledge in anyway that a device was on the dock attachment piece. Back to present day... I got my speaker back from Bose, and I was so happy to try it out. I put my iPod on the attachment, and voila! It charged the iPod (so clearly it registered that a device was attached), but DID NOT PLAY MUSIC....Exact same message about incompatibility. So, when my husband got home, we tried his phone (this is last week, literally, and I was mad thinking it was the recent apple software update and that I just threw away $100). Guess what? His phone worked! Pandora, his music, you name it. When I called Bose and suggested it could be a software update issue? They replied it wasn't, that the sound dock works with the devices after update, but the piece was still bad, as it was not working correctly if it was not playing the iPod, regardless of the new update, and/or what generation it was. So my thoughts are that it is the attachment where you sit your device on the Bose that has gone faulty. I packaged up my speaker and it's going backs to Bose at their expense to repair. It stinks that I won't have it for Christmas to play music as we enjoy the outdoors, but at this point, I will just be content if they get it to work again!

Ok Gang... I have figured this problem out and can fix it at least for iPods.

SOLUTION: Plug your iPod into your computer and go to iTunes.

Back up the contents of your iPod.

Find the RESTORE button on iTunes and click on it. This will reset your iPod to the factory settings (and erase everything that is on your iPod).

Synch your iPod to reload all of its contents back onto your iPod.

I did this, then tried to use my Bose Sound Dock, and it worked just as it had before.

Clearly, what this means is that Apple has modified the iPod software in one of its updates, and it makes iPods incompatible with Bose Sound Docks. Poor programming to say the least.

I tried getting a hold of the Senior Apple Tech as I said I would, but after leaving a message for him to call me back, he never did. So, I don't have a solution for iPhones yet... It may be that if you reset your iPhone to its original factory settings it would work as it did for the iPod - I just haven't tried it yet as I've got so much stuff on my iPhone and I'm fearful of erasing it all and not being able to get it all back.

When I figure out the iPhone solution I'll get back with you.

Stand by...

I rang Bose last week who insisted I must have damaged the 30 pin connector and offered the £70 'repair' As I am away for Christmas I will wait till I return in January. As friends also have Bose sound docks I will try my iPhone with their docks.

If it works it is not the software and I will send it to be repaired.

Could someone enlighten me - I bought the sound dock at least 4 years ago and I am not certain if it EVER charged the

iPhone/iPod - presently it not only doesn't play the music but there is no lightning strike in the corner of the screen - the technician I spoke to suggested the repair would also as an update 'charge' the iPod.

I seem to remember it didn't in which case it is worth the £70 to achieve that and a one year warranty

Dec 29, 2013 11:21 AM in response to CazMacC

It did charge the iPod and iPhone. I've had mine for about 4 years as well. I sent mine in for repair and am anxiously awaiting its return. My pin connector was damaged, it didn't charge or play any apple device. I figured with the extended one year warranty they provide, it's better to repair it than get a new one for now. See my input above about my experience thus far.

Jan 8, 2014 3:30 PM in response to JAG2014

Voila! It is now officially working! I must conclude that it was a Bose issue. It took two trips to their facility, but my old iPod now works on the sound dock again. The pin connector had to be replaced as well as the power adapter. I would call Bose about repair. I can offer my ticket number as a reference if The rep you speak to needs it. The repair cost me $100, but I now have a one year warranty on my device vs undying a new one and spending north of $200 unnecessarily for now, IMHO. Hopefully it will give me many more years than that. :)
