How to restore iPhone 4S that is blacked out, locked out?

Yesterday my iPhone 4S froze up and the screen blacked out/was unresponsive. Originally I could still use Siri but the phone would not unlock and Siri could not launch any apps.I used Find My iPhone from my MacBook to lock it in order to try getting into it, but it would not accept my (correct) passcode. Now it is completely black screened and responds to nothing. I have no idea if it is off or on. Now it is black screened and locked out so iTunes cannot do a recovery restore. Is there any other solution before it has to be taken to an Apple store?
