I frequently receive mail from friends with .msg and .eml attachments , and do not use MS Outlook on my MBP . I do not see any App to translate those files . Does anyone have a work around to open these files ?

use freeware software. there are multiple freeware options are available to open MSG and EML

The Mail app on Mac works fine for me to open .eml files

For eml files I use a website to translate the offending eml document: https://www.encryptomatic.com/viewer/. You download the eml sludge, upload it to encryptomatic. It translates and then you see a regular-looking email window with the photo or link the sender wanted you to see. Good old Microsoft, mucking things up for no particularly good reason.

Another way to do it is to download the file to your computer, locate it in Finder, right-click it (or Ctrl-click it) and select "Quick preview" (or something similar). The system will then open the file in Preview. I can get this to work for .eml files in Yosemite; don't know about .msg ones.
