Risks of Upgrading OS X 10.5.8

Hi! I have OS X 10.5.8 and I need to upgrade/update.

Will I lose everything that's on my computer like documents and Word and all that stuff if I just get Snow Leopard or Mavericks or something?

Ultimately, I'd like to be able to use Adobe Creative Cloud and get apps like Kindle reader and things like that.

I'm sorry...I'm not savvy to this stuff at all and I have no idea what to do or if my files will be ruined if I get something more current.

No, you won't, but see below. Back your content up anyway.

If you upgrade the computer past 10.6.8, it'll lose the ability to run PowerPC software such as Microsoft Office 2004.

Okay, thank you. So... I would need to buy a newer version of Microsoft Office? Would I still be able to read my older documents I made before? I'm sorry this is such an elementary question!
