iDVD does not see new Movies

Since the Maveriks update and subsequent iMovie update I can no longer see my newly created movies in iDVD or pull them across to burn them. It is unusual for quality apple products not to function. I have read that Apple are saying that DVDs are old technology but who are they to decide on what we use in our own homes? Any help on fixing this issue would be appreciated.

First try the export option in iMovie and then drag the resulting file from your desktop into iDVD (that did not work for me but I saw it worked for someone else). If that does not work and you still have the old version of iMovie, export your movie to it and then get it over to iDVD. The new version export results in an .mp4 file. If you only have the new version, you can use something like MPEG Streamclip or Handbrake to convert your movie from .mp4 ot a .mov (quicktime) file which will work with iDVD.

FWIW, iDVD works well both in Mountain lion and Mavericks; I've used it several times. And you do need it (or another software) to burn movies to DVD - iMovie no longer encodes/burns.

Here are the choices to 'share' in the new version:

Choosing File brings up a dialog offering 1080 or 720p or "large" (whatever that is) and results in an .mp4 file. Clicking on 'compatibility of your choice brings up this:

As you can see, the only things the "file" is compatible with are a Mac and a PC. But, even the greyed out options do not include DVDs.

I've only played around with it a couple of times, and I may or may not use one of the trailers, but for regular use, I will stay with the older versions. This one is far too cloud centric for me.

iDVD still works fine in Mavericks, though not sold or supported by Apple any longer. Here is a step by step of how to use the new iMovie and iDVD to produce a fully working DVD:

1. Create a project in iMovie 10.0.1

2. Go to File>Share>File... and for Size choose Large 540P (960 x 540) and click Next

3. Choose a location on the hard drive to save the file to.

4. Wait for the blue circle activity indicator to finish.

5. In Finder, verify that iMovie created an MP4 file in the location specified in step 3.

6. Open iDVD and click "Create New Project."

7. Give the project a name and save it to your hard drive.

8. Drag the file you created earlier from the Finder into your iDVD project window.

(or go to File>Import>Video... and choose your video there)

9. Make any adjustments to drop zones, etc.

10. Click the burn button.

11. Insert a DVD and let it do its thing.

Enjoy!

iMovie 9.0.9 (or iMovie HD 6 as well and the same/more setting choices are available in MPEG Streamclip) - File menu > Share > Export using Quicktime > Movie to Qucktime movie > Options > you can choose from

Settings:

User uploaded file

There are multiple choices for compression, quality, frame rate, etc. Then there are multiple options for size:

When done, you get the summary dialog I showed earlier. That is how I export all my movies and slideshows; after that, they go into iDVD.

Great stuff Alan. Here is what I did.

Using the now unsupported iDVD within Mavericks December 2013.

After editing and creating a Movie or Movies in iMovie do Share.

Then select File

Then using the selection up and down arrows within the dialogue box select Large 540P(960 x 540) According to other members this is due to the Superdrive in the Mac outputting a maximum of that quality which is OK for Standard Definition. I also found that, for me, selecting a larger format failed during processing.

Select next then give your File a Name and Location on your hard drive.

Note:-

This takes a while and there is no indication that anything is happening!

The output is the edited Movie and is created as an MP4 file. Once you have your Movie or Movies prepared as MP4 then you can continue to iDVD.

At this point you can use iDVD in the normal way except that to input your Movies you just drag and drop the files into the respective Drop Zones.

Finally burn your Movie (I used DVD-R) this is time consuming and takes almost real time outputting to the DVD.

Note:-

I found that using Standard 4:3 as the project format gave the best results on my widescreen TV. If you use widescreen when creating the project even if the images are kept inside of the boundary lines on the TV the picture bleeds off the edges of the screen. This is in the UK on a PAL TV. I also found that widescreen taken from my Humax Box and created as a DVD created an image that bled of the edges of the screen.

In general I am happy with the output but would happily take more advice on perfecting my projects.

Ahh, I never use the Superdrive. I use an external burner and Toast to burn (but it is encoded in professional mode/widescreen in iDVD). But, it does not seem to make sense that it would have an impact: a burner burns whatever the software tells it to do - no more, no less. Might be different in the PAL format, but using NTSC, widescreen works perfectly and so do the HD settings, especially since both of my cameras shoot in full HD widescreen. Why would I ruin my footage by shrinking it (or pay for a camera that shoots in full HD/widescreen)?
