recovering my ipod touch 4th generation

are you positive? my ipod was my life all my picture were on there, everything. my brother told me i dont need i cloud but i feel like i should of gotten it...should i get an icloud if i do have to restore it

i told me the same exact thing as before it just said "your ipod is in recovery mode recover/restore your ipod before using itunes" i mean my computer told me i was in DFU mode and did a little scan thing and said that my device was ready to use so i tried going on itunes and it said that
