Is there a way to customize safari bookmarks' icons

I guess the question says it all.

I would like to customize the generic bookmarks' icons in the safari Favorites page.

Any way to do that?

iPad (3rd gen) Wi-Fi + Cellular, OS X Mavericks (10.9), Mini, PBG412, iPhone4S

Old question, but still an issue. I had searched for a solution myself but after reading this and other sites saying no, it can't be done I gave up. Then by accident I discovered how to change them :) You are limited to what pictures you can use, and any bookmark that already has a picture of the company logo will not change.

Open a safari page.

Tap on the bookmarks icon.

Tap favourites.

Tap edit.

Select a bookmark with a generic letter-in-a-cube pic and tap at the start of the name.

Switch to emoji keyboard and select a relevant pic.

Tap done!

Here's a before and after shot of my favourites screen so you can see what I mean :D

I thought it was very clear what he meant my "customize". Instead of the boring default blue square with the first letter of the website in it, by customize he would like to add a png or other such graphic etc. Customize is a word most Mac addicts going way back would immediately comprehend, as customizing one's computer desktop appearance etc. has been a characteristic or quality that Apple product owners have long prided themselves in.

I had the same problem. I modified my iphone bookmarks:

  1. if the bookmark was "http://google.com", I modified it as "http://www.google.com"
  2. if the bookmark was "http://www.bing.com", I modified it as "http://bing.com"

In this way the icons will change back. If I return address to the previous configuration the airport logo will be back...

However, this way I got those logos out of my iPhone. Anyway, this does not remove the hijack program from iPhone.

Thanks RiffRaff! You've solved my multi-year irritation with the Safari favorites!!!

This is truly an excellent and very quick fix! Granted (as someone will surely point out) its not a full/true "customization" of the icon that the original questioner was looking for....and I can't seem to find a perfect emoji for all my favs -- but your idea is BY FAR the best solution I've ever seen (or heard of) to fix Apple's silly/unwarranted limitation on fav icon design!

At the very least, it gets rid of the obscenely boring/plain letter-in-a-cube icon that we're otherwise stuck with.

Thanks for sharing ... hopefully others see this (it's an older thread that I just happened to hit upon...I hope others find it too).

Cheers!

There must be a way since my generic ones all got changed to gogo ones after I used the internet on an airline. That irritated me so much that I deleted all those favorites, but I cannot find any way to prevent every new bookmark from having the gogo icon. Please help!!!!

What do you mean by "customize"?

If you want to change the icon for a specifc bookmarked site in the Favorites list, then lizdance40 is correct. There is no way to change a site to use a custom icon.

If you want to change which bookmarked sites appear in the list, then the answer is yes, you can change the list of sites that appears in the list as well the order that they appear. To change which sites appear in the Favorites list, add bookmarks to or remove bookmarks from the Favorites folder by navigating to that folder in the Boomarks pop-over (tap the Bookmarks icon to the right of the address field, then tap the Bookmarks icon, then navigate to the Favorites folder, then tap the "Edit" button). You can also open a new tab, then press-and-hold on one icon to move it to a new location. Just drop it when it's in place.

No gogo app ever installed. Many other posters have had this annoying hack after using gogo wifi service. No one, even gogo has a way to get rid of it. Although gogo is probably not interested in reversing it. My only recourse was to send a flaming email to gogo customer service.

I have same problem GoGo hijacked my icons on my ipad. I have tried clearing Safari several times with no result. Please fix this Apple or if someone can help get rid of all those annoying Gogo icons, please help. It seems to affect only certain website icons.
