2nd monitor screen saver glitchy in Mavericks

I have a primary 30" cinema display and a 23" secondary Cinema rotated 90 degrees. I'm running an early 2009 Mac Pro, 2x2.26QC w/12GB and Nvidia GeForce GT120 512MB ram. In Mavericks, when the screen saver activates, the 2nd display goes wonky. It does not do this when I boot to 10.8. If I rotate the screen back to "normal" orientation in preferences, the problem does not occur.

Anyone else having this issue?

Mac Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9)

I am having a similar issue as well i am running on an early 2009 mac pro with the following video cards.

  • ATI Radeon HD 5770 -- has 27 inch cinema display and 1 Dell 2009W display rotated 90 degrees.
  • NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 -- has a single Dell 2009W display rotated 90 degrees.

When my screensaver kicks in the monitor hooked up to the NVIDIA card goes nuts flashing like a bad japanese cartoon from the 80's the other 2 monitors work just fine. Coming out of the screensaver the display is corrupted until i change the resolution or unplug-replug the monitor back in.

I sort of had this problem in earlier versions of OS X but i also had the primary screen check box for screensavers which is now gone in mavericks.

I would like to add that it does have something to do with the rotation of the monitor; when it is not rotated the screen corruption does not occur. When it is at least rotated in any way 90,180, or 270 screen remains permanently corrupted after the screensaver kicks in.

So TL;DR something with rotated displays and the NVIDIA card under mavericks is an issue. Workaround is to not use rotated displays.

@shooter2JIm similar set-up...

2009 MacPro 2.66 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon / 32 GB 1066 MHz DDR3 ECC / dual

NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 512 MB / 30-inch DVI (2560 x 1600) / 23-inch DVI (1200 x 1920) (270º on left edge)

The secondary display (23") gets bad diagonal corruption with very harse refreshing / flickering when screen saver starts in preview mode. Every other app (pro grahics/ /video) works perfectly, and the only screen saver that works is *Word of the Day* because I belive it doesn't use Quartz Composer?

Originally had issue with display not working on boot until Apple "fixed" that as well.

I added the 2nd video card (Radeon 5770) and the problem went away for the most part. It was glitchy with a monitor on each card so I put them both on the Radeon. It still hiccups every once in a while on the main monitor with a black screen flash, but that's about it. I have no suggestions for you MBP guys other than keep hammering APPLE to GET THIS FIXED!! We shouldn't have to upgrade hardware because something as simple as this breaks with a software update. If they say a certain OS is compatible with certain hardware, then it OUGHT to be FULLY compatible and tested.
