I am trying to clone my iMac to my MacBook Air, but the only way I can see is migration assistant. Is this the correct way?

Migration Assistant will not replace the data in the account you're logged into. If you have only one account, and it has the same name as an account on the other computer, create a new account, then log out and log into the new account to do the migration.
I just want to copy the information; not to lose it on the source computer.
You won't lose anything. Migration Assistant changes nothing on the source computer. The mistake many people make with it is that they expect it to overwrite their existing account.
