Being new to macs, should I use the incorporated firewall?

If you are behind a NAT router, then there is no need for it.

If you have services like File Sharing or Remote Login enabled on your Air, you may want to run the firewall when you are not on your home router. If you don't have any services turned on, then you aren't allowing anything in with or without the firewall.
