Q: iphone 5 ios 7.04 - camera roll has STOPPED backing up to photostream

I have an iphone 5 running on the latest ios software.

On the 21st November my phone stopped backing up my camera roll to the photostream on my laptop - previous to this it regularly updated.  I do not have a huge amount of photos.  I take about 10 a day.  I have space/memory on the icloud and phone.

On my phone I can see the photos in camera roll and on photostream.

I have been onto icloud control panel and signed in/out checked and un checked and checked again the tick box for photos.

I have backed up the phone to another PC,

On the icloud area in settings it says "Last BAck up" Never . . .

When I click back up - I have a charger in - I am on the house wifi but it says

Backing Up.......

------------------------------------------------

Estimating time remaining

Then after 5+ minutes (still charging AND on the strong home wifi)  it just stops and says something like "unable to back up"

Would REALLY appreciate your help as been battling to get it back to working since 21 Nov (read loads on line tried loads) as holding up all my surveyors reports I need to get to clients.  THe phone is out with the surveyor everyday and we keep missing each other to get them onto the PC . . .pulling my hair out !!

Kind Regards,

Annabelle

Failure to back up to iCloud can be caused by a corrupt existing backup that needs to be deleted, or by data on your device that is causing the backup to fail.  To troubleshoot these, try deleting your last iCloud backup (if you have one) by turning off iCloud Backup in Settings>iCloud>Storage & Backup, then tap Manage Storage, tap your device under Backups, then tap Delete Backup.  Then go back and turn iCloud Backup back on and try backing up again.

If it still won't back up, you may have an app or something in your camera roll that is causing the backup to fail.  To locate which one, go to Settings>iCloud>Storage & Backup>Manage Storage, tap the name of your device under Backups, under Backup Options tap Show All Apps, then turn them all to Off (including camera roll) and try backing up again.  If the backup is successful, then the camera roll and/or one of your apps is causing the backup to fail and you'll have to located by process of elimination. Turn the camera roll On and try backing up again.  If it succeeds, turn some of your apps to On and try backing up again.  If it succeeds again, turn some more apps to On then try again; repeat this process until it fails.  Eventually you'll be able to locate the problem app and exclude it from your backup.

    Hello Randers,

First of all thank you for posting - it is really appreciated.

I have tried all of the above.

To the point where EVERYTHING is turned off....

It has now been "estimating time remaining , , , ,

This hangs for ages then says 29 mins then 31 etc and keeps going up and then eventually says 4 hours ?

It says backing up but the blue progress line is still jsut a dot and has not moved.

Is this normal especially when EVERYTHING is switched off and I think there is actually NOTHING to back up ?

    It is still running . . .

I will update you as to what happens next.

    Thank you again, Annabelle

In case it's a networking problem (even though your wifi is strong), you might try the following:

    1. Power-cycleyour wireless router (unplugging it for 15 seconds, then plugging it back in), then reset network settings on your phone (in Settings>General>Reset);
    2. Check to see if there is a firmware on your router;
    3. Change your router's DNS settings to use Google's public DNS (see https://developers.google.com/speed/public-dns/docs/using).

If none of those work, you can always manually back up to your computer using iTunes by connecting it to your computer, opening iTunes, clicking on the name of your phone in iTunes, then going to the Summary tab of your iTunes sync settings and clicking Back Up Now.  Also go to File>Devices>Transfer Purchases.  Or you could disable iCloud backup in Settings>iCloud and your phone will automatically back up to your computer every time you sync.

Hello again and THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU !

I have tried all of above ! (with help from an IT friend) - no luck . .

I have manually backed up to my PC (not where the photostream is located but on my PC where it is linked on my apple ID . . . . . . .

But still nothing has mvoed over to photostream and back up on icloud still shows as incomplete EVEN with EVERYTHING off . . . .

should I set up a separate itunes account on the lap top where the photostream is against the icloud of the photostream ?

    would this help ?

    Thank you again . . .

You're welcome.  Changing to a different computer or setting up a new iTunes account won't help with this.

I'm not sure what else to suggest as far as your problem backing up to iCloud, short of restoring your phone (which also might not fix things).  You might want to just consider backing up to your computer instead.  If you went to Settings>iCloud>Storage & Backup and turned off iCloud Backup, your phone would automatically back up to your computer everytime you sync.  Or, you could make an appointment with the Genius bar at a nearby Apple store and see if they have any ideas.

As far as your photo stream photos not appearing on your PC, you might need to repair the iCloud control panel.  To do this, follow steps 1-3here: http://www.wikihow.com/Remove-Programs-(Windows-7), choosing "iCloud" on the list of programs (in step 3), and choose "Repair" at step 4.  After doing so, restart your PC, then take a new photo on your phone and see if it appears in your my photo stream folder on your PC after a few minutes.  If it doesn't, do the same you did before, except this time follow the guide to Uninstall "iCloud".  After uninstalling it, download and install it from here: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1455.  Then sign into your account and check the data you want to sync with iCloud again.  Then test photo stream again.
