Re-installing GarageBand 6 after downloading GB 10

I understand that when you download the new GarageBand, it puts the older version in it's own folder so that you can use both. I prematurely deleted version 6, thinking all of my AU's and instruments would be available in 10. I understand now, due to bit issues, some of them I can no longer use until the manufacturers issue updates. I don't have any problem with this, but my issue is that now I have 10 and want to get 6 back. What's the best way to go about doing this? I assume it will be difficult, and that I'll have to download a really old version and do one update at a time? It's not even an issue of wanting to use old instruments and AU's that I can't use anymore, but I have projects I was in the middle of that use those things, and I definitely need to get the old version of GB back on my computer so that I can finish them. Opening them in the new GB will cause a lot of problems.

Reverting to GarageBand '11 is difficult, since Apple does not provide an installer for download.

Do you still have a backup from the time before the upgrade, so you could restore GarageBand 6.0.5 from the backup?

Or installers from the time you bought GarageBand '11? If your Mac came with SnowLeopard, GarageBand '11 should be on the DVD with the bundled iLife apps. What is the system your Mac originally came with?

i actually do run time machine to an external drive. i grabbed the app from the last backup in which i had 6.0.5 installed, but it wouldn't run. i tried to open it, and open old GB projects with it, but it would just start to open and immediately close. likely because i just grabbed the app file. how else do you suggest i get the backed up version from my external.

i think my computer came with leopard or snow leopard. i don't actually remember. i will try and hunt down my install cd. however! won't this just overwrite GarageBand 10? if so, shall i uninstall GarageBand 10, then install GarageBand original instal from the disc, and then reinstall GarageBand 10 so i can get the original 10 & 6 setup?

How did you do that? Did you restore it from the Time Tunnel, or simply drag it from the backup drive?

You need to restore it from the backup using Time Machine:

With the "Applications" folder selected enter TimeMachine and in the Time Tunnel go back in time, then ctrl-click GarageBand and select "Restore to" and select a folder outside "Applications".

If you want to restore from your SnowLeopard installer, I'd rename your current GarageBand 10.0 temporarily, so it will not be overwritten. Only install selectively GarageBand from the bundled applications.

alright, i uninstalled all versions of garageband on my system. then i downloaded the old garageband. then i downloaded the new version, so that it would move the old version into it's own folder. however, every time i try to open the old garageband, it closes immediately before it tries to load any of the AUs or jam packs or whatever else. am i doing something wrong?

checking in again...does anyone have a solution? i still cannot open the old garageband even though i loaded a backup, and installed the new garageband. it did put the old garageband into it's own folder as expected, but i still can't open it. i click on the app, and it starts to open for a split second and disappears, as before. hoping that the default answer 'reformat' isnt the only answer.

is there any more information on what is happening? Is there a crash log? Any kind of error message?

no. nothing. no crash report pops up, as per usual when an application crashes. the garageband icon opens up on my dock, acts like its loading because the little blue light is blinking slowly next to the icon, and then it disappears. the other garageband works perfectly.

Are still the library files installed, that GarageBand '11 needs? The Instruments library and the Loop library?

Compare with your backup, if the folder

/Library/Application Support/GarageBand/

is still there.

If not, restore it.

I am not sure if what I am seeing is what should be there.

Is there anything I need to know in order to be using both Garageband versions on my system? Not literally simultaneously, but I was under the impression that they could co-exist and both be used. Maybe I am mistaken.

That is exactly, what I am seeing in my Library.

And both, GarageBand 6.0.5 and GarageBand 10.0 can coexist.

If your GarageBand backup was not part of the latest backup, but a bit older, then the restored version may not be complete, since TimeMachine may delete older backups.

But you said, that the GarageBAnd 10 installer moved GB 6.0.5 to a subfolder. Then check again, if now GarageBand 6.0.5 is appearing on the Purchased section of the AppStore. If yes, then trash your restored GB 6.0.5 (don't empty the Trash), and try to download GB 6.0.5 again.

When one downloads the new Garageband, is 6.0.5 supposed to appear in the Purchases section? It does not make sense to me that it would appear there since the download of GarageBand '11 does not re-download 6.0.5, but simply moves it's destination to a subfolder automatically.

I wish there was an easier way to just re-download GarageBand 6.0.5, or at least an older version so that I could update it to the latest version.

For me, the AppStore is showing both versions as installed, unless you removed the older version. I was hoping, that it recognized again GB 6.0.5 as installed, since it moved it to a different folder.

How large is your restored GarageBand 6.0.5? My version has a size of 375,3 MB and is from 18. Februar 2012.

I recently did a clean install of Mavericks and installed GB 10; would I be able to install GB 6.0.5 on my system as well and use it without issue? I have Mainstage 3 as well and all of the Jam Packs, loops, etc. I'm new to Macs and my first thought was to create a partition on my HDD and install 6.0.5 there, but if they can indeed coexist without drama on the same partition then I have the disk to put 6.0.5 on there along side of 10. Thanks!

Your screenshot shows a file size of 182,2 MB. That is too small. I should be 375,3 MB - that is what my GB 6.0.5 is showing. So your restore from Time Machine must have been incomplete.

Time Machine may have already deleted parts from the old backup, if it needed space. You can only be sure, that the latest backup is complete.
