MacBook Pro slow to wake from sleep after installing SSD

I have an odd problem with my early 2011 13" MacBook Pro (2.7GHz Core i7, 8GB memory). I'm currently running Mavericks, but had the same issue under Mountain Lion.

Some months ago I replaced the original 500 GB hard drive with an SSD, a 480 GB SanDisk Extreme II. It works perfectly and the computer seems lightening fast by comparison, except in one respect: when waking from sleep mode, there is a delay of about 30 seconds before the computer comes back to life. Without going into the details of my trouble shooting path, I'm as certain as can be that the problem is associated with the SSD. In fact, I replaced the original SSD with a new one of the same make and model, and the delay persists. I've tried cloning and swapping the HD and SSD in various states, and the result is alway the same: no delay with the HD, a ~30 second delay with the SSD.

I have my computer set to require a password on waking, and the delay takes either of two forms. Either (1) there's a wait of about 30 seconds before it will accept my password, or (2) it will accept my password, but after I type and enter it there's a delay of about 30 seconds before the password screen disappears and the computer becomes usable.

At this poin, I'm about to reinstall the HD, since the snappier performance of the SSD doesn't compensate for the aggravation of waiting for it to wake up after sleep.

I'll welcome and thank you for any suggestions on a fix.

It may an issue of the interaction between the SanDisk SSD and OS X, but it's not just under Mavericks, and it doesn't occur on all systems running Mavericks. My delay problem started under Mountain Lion, before Mavericks came out, and continued with no change after I installed Mavericks. Moreover, when I installed the same SanDisk drive as the boot drive in my desktop Mac Pro, there was no wake-up delay. It only occured when the SSD was installed in the MacBook Pro. And, as I've noted elsewhere, there's no problem using a Samsung SSD in the MacBook Pro, with precisely the same disk image the SanDisk had when I was experience the delay problem. It's aggravating, and I'm glad I had an alternative use for the SanDisk unit.

I also received a reply from SanDisk today indicating that they are escalating it and (hopefully) working with Apple towards a solution. Similar to what 'starkcs' said, mavericks works great as long as I'm not using the SanDisk SSD. If I use the OWC SSD, it works perfectly. Hopefully SanDisk and Apple will get together and figure out what needs to happen. I would assume a firmware update for the SSD is where the solution lies.

As a side note, I did go ahead and disable safe sleep (since I never let my battery die) and this greatly improves the logon time (no delay at all at logon after waking, but occasional delay after the desktop is shown - kind of sixes at this point, but it was at least a clue)

To disable safe sleep (only do this if you do NOT want your laptop to restore your session in the event of battery depletion):

from a terminal:

sudo rm -rf /var/vm/sleepimage

sudo pmset hibernatemode 0

As I said, this greatly improves the speed for logging in after waking from sleep but I have run into the same 'delay' (not every time) as soon as I try to start an app. Could just be whatever needs to read from disk first (logon, or app starting) causing the hang.

Hopefully this makes sense.

I spoke too soon, the disabling of safe sleep appeared to work for about a day, but now I realize it just delays the 'delay' - after the computer wakes up, the delay happens as soon as I attempt to use any applications (the same 30 to 40 second pause). It is such a weird issue. I would gladly switch back to my OWC drive but the effort of imaging the drive, swapping it out, losing 240GB worth of space seems unecessary since the problem only happens after waking from sleep, after that the SanDisk drive *seems* fine (hopefully its not just waiting and getting worse over time). I think I'm going to just continue to use the SanDisk in hopes that they come up with a fix.

Funny thing. It is faster for me to have boot from a complete shutdown vs wake from sleep.

I've posted that my OWC Mercury Extreme Pro 6G (240GB) works great under mavericks. I saw that starkcs reported that their Samsung drive works fine. Does anyone else have any other brand that seems to work fine? Any other brands that are not (besides SanDisk)? Just curious.

I have the very same issue on my MBP late '11.

1. When I try to wake up from "lid down" it will take approx. 25-30 s every time.

2. When I try to wake up from sleep when the computer have the lid open I will just get a black screen. Have to close the lid, wait for one minute or so (until the led indicator starts oscillate), and then I can wake it up (with delay of course). Seems the computer fails to properly enter sleep as well...

Anyone found any news on this issue?

I've got an early 2011 MBP 15" with the same 480GB drive running Mavericks. When I got the drive I chose to install a Time Machine backup image to the drive and I originally thought some system file didn't install correctly and that might be why I was getting the delay. So, I refomated and selectively installed applications and documents once OS X was installed. I didn't have a delay for about 2 weeks and then it started again. I found the instructions for changing Safe Sleep to 0, so I'm hoping that will help some (it has so far) until Apple and SanDisk figure out what the issue is. I'll keep watching this thread to see if anyone comes up with a better idea to try.

Mine is also a G25.

I was hoping that today's release of OS X 10.9.2 would include a fix for this issue, but it appears that my MBP is still taking upwards of 15-20 seconds to wake from sleep (same behavior with TRIM Enabler off and on).

The SanDisk support staff now claim that "this is not a known issue", so a fix seems unlikely at this point.

I'm going to try and sell my Extreme II and buy a 840 EVO.

I haven't given a status update in some time. As of right now I'm still having the same issue. I've learned that it actually takes less time for me to boot from scratch than it does to wake from sleep. Hate it. But, once booted, as you all know, the SSD works great. I am using Trim Enabler, don't think I've mentioned that in the past. After the 10.9.2 update I had to re-enable trim. As far as Sandisk goes, any time I send information to them regarding my ongoing/open case, they simply reply with 'they are working on a solution' - though I don't believe them.

I'm curious if anyone out there is using this SSD as a secondary drive in their MBP and if the wake from sleep issue still occurs. I have the media bay expansion kit in my MBP, I keep an older 500GB HDD (the original that came with the computer) in that slot so that I can use it to store large files, etc. Anyhow, if someday I decide to get another SSD I would consider moving the sandisk to the secondary slot and wondering if it will have the same wake issues. My hope is that since the drive wouldn't be the startup disk anymore maybe it won't have the issue.

Good to know that so many others are experience this issue. Misery loves company right?
