iphone 5, redirects from safari links to app store

I've read all kinds of writeups of what sounds like the same problem without any directions that work to fix the problem! I have an iphone 5 that is not jailbroken and every time I use Safari (Or any other browser for that matter) when I click on certain links instead of taking me to the link I want to go to (like an online document) I get sent to anwhere from 3-5 web pages quickly (they don't load entirely, they just flash in the URL) before ending up in the App Store for some random game (it's always different). I'm looking for an actual solution to the problem, I've reset the phone repeatadly, I've removed all of my apps and then reloaded them from itunes, all with no success at fixing the problem. This isn't just a one time thing it is reocurring and very annoying, I'm shocked that in 2 hrs of reading other forums describe what sounds like the same problem, no one yet has been able to post a definitive solution that works!! I'd love to figure this one out! Thanks, B

I don't have a router. The redirect was to Candy Crush Saga while reading articles from online magazines. I stopped reading online magazines on my mobile device. As I've said before, the so-called genius's at my local Apple store witnesses it after giving the same argument as you "no viruses in Apple" ********. Their only fix was to turn off JavaScript. You sound like a climate change denier. Stick with it Thomas.

You sound like Jenny McCarthy. Just as you should listen to a medical professional rather than a stripper for medical advice, so should you listen to a security professional rather than posts on a random internet forum for advice about iOS malware. Go do your homework. You'll find that every security professional who knows squat about Apple devices will say the same thing as me. The only iOS malware requires a jailbroken device... period.

Actually I did consult experts including self-proclaimed ones like yourself. I have even posted references from valid sources on this blog which describe this problem. I have also consulted Apples "genius" staff who, like you, repeated the same Apple line about "no viruses in Apple" until they saw the redirect for themselves on my iphone5. Btw, the scene where Jenny menstruates on the grocery store floor...one of the funniest scenes I have ever seen. Quelle babe.

If your links are any indication, you have not consulted experts and have grossly misunderstood what has been said.

1) Don't mistake journalists for security experts. I'm talking about folks like Rich Mogull, Robert David Graham, Charlie Miller, Brian Krebs, etc.

2) Macs ≠ iPads. Your first link relates to Macs.

3) An SSL vulnerability ≠ malware. Your second link describes the former, not the latter.

Lose the attitude and try a little education.

I'm late into this debate, and don't have much to add per se. I joined here because my wife, daughter and I are all experiencing the same thing being posted here. For me, it's happened on such large sites as ESPN and BBC, so it does make me wonder if the issue could be something other than the websites. I also tried Atomic Web as an alternate browser and it sill happened. Unfortuntely, the redirects on my 12 year olds device is to adult web sites. Glad she's smart enough to tell us and click out.

Any further thoughts? Thanks.

Yup... as I mentioned earlier, it could also be a hacked wireless router. See my response here:

Re: iphone 5, redirects from safari links to app store

Since you're seeing this on multiple devices, from the sounds of it, and on popular sites that are all unlikely to have been hacked, this is almost certainly the problem. The only other likely possibility would be a compromise of your network at the ISP level, such as a DNS poisoning attack. You'd need to talk to your ISP about that, if it looks like it's not a router issue.

I had this problem a while ago and posted here as well. Since then the issue has seldom reappeared. My theory is that the culprit is coding in embedded advertisements. I don't know if it applies to everyone else, but when I encountered it, I often found an ad on the website that was for whatever it was I got pushed to the App Store for. (Happened a ton for clash of clans ads) Next time it happens, poke around the website to see if you can find an advertisement for whatever you were directed to, then send a message to the site about it. Just a hunch, really, but check it out.

I have to agree I think it's embedded coding in the advertisements on the websites which is redirecting us off to download games and rubbish and whatnot. I have noticed it on reputable large sites and it's endemic on less salubrious sites.

I don't think it's a hacked router - because we don't have a router, mobile data only household.

Also if I use AdBlocker it doesn't happen.

This is something that Apple needs to fix as it's infuriating when you're on a site and suddenly you're redirected. And why advertisers think this kind of thing is going to endear you to click on the advertisements or buy their product after they have just f***** you off, god only knows.

Kids off to school, my first work appointment is late am, so time to trouble shoot. I turned on my Wifi Hotspot and will use this am. I have gone straight back to a link that redirected me earlier and tried to replicate on the hotspot. So far it's been clean, which for now supports the idea that it is the router. But I will give it a bit more time.

Thanks. Appreciate it. And I bookmarked your site for future reference.

I meant to post this to you, but hit the wrong reply button. Getting old *****.

Let's try again, shall we?

Oh well. Just happened using my WiFi hotspot. So it's happened on two different internet connections, two different browsers on both connections, and multiple devices. Logic narrows it down to either the various sites or the device. There was no ad on the site (KUMB, a soccer site) related to a game on the App Store by the way.

I'm thinking it's beyond be for the moment.
