Why does my iphone randomly close down saying I'm out of battery when I'm not?

My iPhone 5 shuts down randomly saying i I have no battery, generally when I'm using an app, taking a photo etc. if I then press the menu button and screen lock button for a few seconds the phone starts back up. This is annoying and unreliable. Anyone else having this problem or can offer any advice?
