Q: Have Mac Compatability Issues Been Resolved for Philips Brilliance 298X4QJAB 29-Inch Screen LCD Monitor

I'm having the same issues as this reviewer.  I cannot get native resolution with HMDI or DVI or DVI with DVI to thunderbolt adatper on a Mac Mini.  I have not had a chance to try MacBook Air or MacBook Pro Retina (my main computer) and I haven't bought the cable he recommends yet.  I won't be able to test on the other two computers any time soon, one is with girlfriend and the other is perpetually in the shop, 30 days plus (but that's another story).

Mac users take note: I had some compatibility issues with this display and my Macbook Pro Retina. Specifically the Mac's video driver thinks it's a television and although I was able to get the full 2560x1080 resolution, text sharpness and overall video quality was very poor. I was unable to resolve the problem and Philips' website didn't have any guidance. It did, however, work fine when plugged into my non-retina Macbook Air.

I also needed to purchase an additional cable, Cable Matters Gold Plated Mini DisplayPort | Thunderbolt to DisplayPort Cable in White 6 Feet, to get it to work with my Macbooks. It wasn't that expensive but I found it was the only cable that would allow the display to work at its native resolution. HDMI and DVI did not get me above 1920x1080.

Mac issues aside, this is a very nice super widescreen display. It's not as narrow as it appears and two web pages are very useable two-up on this super wide display.

The picture-in-picture option isn't anything to get excited about. I found it squished my computer output in its side-by-side mode. Another mode will display the output of a second port in a small window.

Colors and sharpness are good. Pixel density is ok, but it's certainly not a 4K display.

Overall this is a good display and especially interesting for developers and power users. The Mac compatibility issue was very disappointing and I hope Philips can help retina Macbook owners find a solution.

Has anyone resolved this issue for Macs?  What about MacBook Pro Retina?  I'm OK with having to buy a special cable, it's annoying but liveable.  But I don't want to have to run a bunch of "scripts" or whatever he's talking about.  This is a real shame if nobody has fixed this yet.

Thanks.

Hello Friend! I also have the same problem. Buy this monitor 2 weeks ago, I have not been able to operate at 2k resolution dvi or hdmi to, hdmi but for me it detects the monitor as a tv. I use it on my Hackintosh, which has vga output, dvi, hdmi and displayport. well then if you connect to dvi or hdmi monitor can not boot or show the bios and boot the operating system image only shows me once booted osx operating system. I have to get a cable China displayport, but it ***** that neither for nor dvi hdmi is capable of displaying image when loading the bios, if not touched me a defective model or that this monitor is so because people who buy it for use in a tower pc with windows7 and someday wants to access the bios of your pc, not as ara.
it is a shame for this monitor.

Was there any updated drivers released? I am trying to get this monitor (298P4QJEB) to work with the new MacPro and am unable to get the native resolution or anything past 1920 x 1080.

Currently apple engineers are reviewing my capture data, I will update if any resolve comes from Apple but any help in the meantime would be great.

I still have not been able to find any useful information on this.  I can get it to do resolutions that aren't disorted but it still has very ugly fonts on all newer apple products.

    Philips support won't even respond.

How long did you work with Philips on this? I suspect Apple will state that philips needs to release a driver for apple products.

    Hello friends!
I got to show me the 2k resolution with displayport cable, but the mouse toward nonsense, as if with lag.
I was more than a week sending and receiving emails from philips tech support ... a week to do nothing, since I came back to ask again and again the same things.
in the end I returned and I think is the best thing you can do you.
return the monitor and hopefully other brands such as lg if work properly with our macs or our hackintosh
if you can not return the monitor .... luck with your dead

I have found the resolve with this issue. I was working with Apple Supportand after confirming I was using a Dual Link DVI cable Apple informed me I will need a mini Displayport to Dual-Link DVI Adapter cable. So after $100 you can get this Philips monitor to show in its native resolution.

only way to get native full resolution 2560x1080 is to use mini-display port to displayport adapter.

works great for one screen - HOWEVER doesn't handle daisy chaining properly out of one single mini-display port connection; great frustation there-!

That gets you the full resolution but the fonts still look awful.  It doesn't matter how many screens there are, the fonts look blury and not sharp.
