I have just restored my iPhone 4 and realised that the contacts that were on the new sim card are gone.
It was not backed up with the new sim card prior to the restoration. I thought that the numbers stay on the sim!
now i fear the iphone has wiped the SIM card and the contacts are lost. Can anyone help?

iPhones do not store contacts or any other information on a SIM. If you had contacts on the SIM from another type of phone and then replaced the SIM, then of course those contacts are now lost.
If the contacts were instead in the Contacts app on the iPhone and you performed a sync or backup of your iPhone prior to restoring it, then restoring it from your backup should get back your contacts. If you didn't make a backup, then you'll have to recover the contacts from the original source.

The SIM was a new SIM from a different phone (not iphone) so had numbers on it. After adding the new SIM to the iphone the contacts merged with the existing contacts. I didn't remove this SIM or back up the contacts before restoring. Has the iphone wiped the contacts from the SIM? i can't seem to import. Should i try adding the SIM to another phone?

Sorry, but I can only see your reply in part - it's a long standing forum bug - so if my reply isn't appropriate I apologize. But again, if the contacts were stored on the SIM by another phone, you didn't import them to the iPhone, and you've replaced that SIM, then your contacts are probably lost. If you did import the contacts from the SIM, restore your iPhone from your backup.

To rephrase does a restoration on an iphone delete the data from a SIM card used by another phone?
Attempting a reply: restoring an iPhone will not delete data on a SIM. Again, an iPhone does not write data to a SIM and can't delete data from one. Restoring will delete all content and settings on the iPhone itself and that includes data imported from a SIM from another phone.

I know what your saying but the new numbers were transfered on the new SIM card. If you are saying that the iphone cannot delete SIM data then in theory those numbers should still be on the SIM. However when i go to import sim contacts in settings, nothing is imported.
As a troubleshooting step I would try the SIM in another phone.
