Playlists on my iPod Touch continuously restoring whilst downloading music from iTunes

Over the past few months, I've discovered that every time I connect my iPod to my computer and begin to download new music from my iTunes to my iPod, that it automatically updates the music files on my iPod. While this is happening, it also seems to restore my playlists on my iPod, so that the playlists that I currently have are deleted and replaced with ones I made several months ago.

Is there any way to prevent this from happening so that I don't have to remake my playlists on my iPod every time after it is connected?
