safari settings

When using a homepage with firefox or google, with news, etc - when I click a link it takes me to it and there is an arrow in the upper left that allows me to go back to where I was originally. Safari does not allow me to go back to the site - no arrow going back - unless I am missing something.

I am quite sure this is user error and appreciate any assistance!
