Can I control my Apple TV with a Samsung Smart Touch Remote?

I am trying to control my Apple TV2 with a Samsung 7 series Smart Touch remote. The Samsung universal remote options do not seem to work, nor does the Apple TV apear to be capable of reading inputs from the remote through the Apple TV 3rd party remote setup.

Apple TV, OS X Mavericks (10.9)

I had this working for almost a year but with the upload of iOS for Apple TV 11.0 it stopped working. I'm stuck using the appallingly bad Apple TV remote again. I've tried all the things suggested here to no avail. I think, with the change to iOS 11.0 Apple removed, intentionally or otherwise, the ability to control the Apple TV with a universal remote. Interesting how I can run every other device connected to my Samsung TV with the Smart remote, but the Apple TV - consequence, we avoid using it so we don't have to deal with the frustration of the original Apple remote.

Idk if you got it yet, but I just figured it out. On your tv got to system/device manager/Universal remote setup. Then choose home theater system and type in apple. It will ask you to do a power on test, but no matter if it works or not choose "yes". Thats it.

Note: make sure the ir sensor from samsung is in front of the atv

My tv modle is Un65f7100

Just wanted to confirm that this method works with Samsung's 2014 65" TV as well (Model # UN65HU9000F). Just go to the Universal Remote Setup and follow the instructions as posted. It doesn't matter if the Power Test works or not. Once paired, you will be able to move about in the ATV UI with the keys on the remote (as expected i.e. with the navigational buttons, ENTER key and the RETURN key. You need to make sure that the IR sensor (included with the TV) is close to the ATV (without any obstructions).

I do not know if anyone else noticed this. I have a Samsung Un55hu7250 and the above solution worked with one exception.

If you add it as a "Home Theater" type system then, you cannot tell the TV to use your actual home theater system for the volume control.

If you instead, On your tv got to system/device manager/Universal remote setup. Then choose blue ray device and type in apple. Select Apple, do the power on test, then select "no it didn't work". Then it will ask you to enter the model number of the Blue Ray device. Type in "Apple" in the search and it will list Both Apple1 and Apple2 in the device list. Select Apple2 and then you will have an Apple TV that is configured as a DVD Player so you can tell the TV to control the volume via the Home Theater system.

Net result, I have one remote again finally with Apple TV, Samsung TV, Dish Hopper, Sony BD, Antenna TV and surround sound. (Only if you are using the optical audio out to the theater system)

Agree with gnkopsteWith a couple of "check" items which seem obvious but it's easy to forget one of these and you can frustratingly loop aimlessly around fixes without it working.

1. Make sure the SmartTouch can "see" the TV (thats where you will point it!)

2. Make sure the wired external remote device from the One Connect/TV device can "see" all the devices needing control (this is the "IR sender").

3. Don't move all the devices until you're all confirmed as working, THEN move one at a time making sure remote functionality still works until they are all where you want them inn the room/cabinet

these 3 seem obvious but will save you wasting a lot of time because the external IR device is very sensitive to position and direction.

As a semI-permanent fix i finally duck-taped the external IR device to the inside of the AV/TV cabinet so it was invisible to the room but could see all my 4 HDMI devices (Set-top, AV Receiver,AppleTV and PS3/BR-DVD).

If anyone has a way to control the Apple TV as a "DVD Player" in universal remote setup , so the Apple TV can be used when connected to the "Home Theatre" device, then this would be appreciated ?... you can't connect a HT device through a HT device !!! ... and so we are all faced with the inability for the TV to HDMI-Audio-return the AppleTV studio signal (dolby/5.1) back the the AV receiver and so only ever get dolby/5.1 from the TV-derived sound and smartTV Apps.

Here's how i got my Samsung Smart Remote (JSU7100) to work with the Apple TV.

1. Turn on Apple TV

2. Navigate to 'Learn Remote' and leave it at the screen to learn the basic arrow keys.

3. With Samsung remote, navigate to 'Universal Remote Setup'

4. Add a Blu-ray player and search 'Apple' for brand.

5. Say 'Yes' to Functions Test.

6. Then on the Apple TV, you can now program the keys to work with the Smart Remote.

1. Setup a universal remote (Samsung TV side) that is anything BUT an Apple device (I used a Blue-ray Player, Samsung for example). When it asks for the power function test say YES (whether it works or not). You are done Samsung side.

2.Go into the Apple TV settings and add a 3rd party remote. Follow the instructions and setup the Samsung Remote.

You are done.

I had trouble connecting my Samsung TV remote to control the apple tv. I followed the instruction in this topic and other websites as well and it didn't help.

If you tried everything and it didn't work, try this:

try changing the HDMI port that your apple tv is connected to. Some HDMI ports don't support ARC and that's why it does not recognize the remote while trying the 'Learn Remote'.
