"Do you want to install the updates now or try tonight"

"Updates available" keeps popping up on my desktop, but gives no details of what it will install. My husband installed it and his user name disappeared from the sidebar. In its place was a series of numbers. When he clicked on it, it said "guest." Is this software notification really from Apple?
