My Mac recognises all devices apart from 1st gen ipod touch

Just bought a 1st gen ipod touch for my 2 year old to play games on but despite connecting to wifi and charging on its dock, it fails to be recognised on our MacBook, despite all our other devices being problem free!?!

iPod touch, iOS 1.x

If you are using the USB docking cable connected to the same USB port, when you connect the iPod touch versus the "other devices," the problem may dock connector on the iPod touch. What are the "other devices"?

When you say "charging on its dock," is that a different power-only connection? Or is that dock connected to the USB port on your Mac with a docking cable? If it's connected to the Mac through that dock accessory, what happens when you connect the iPod touch directly to the docking cable?

If you have another USB docking cable, try it with the iPod touch using a direct connection to the Mac's USB port (no dock or USB hub).

The dock connector has different "pins." Some are for data, and some are for power. So, it is possible for an iPod to charge, while not being able to connect for data. Be sure try more than one USB cable with the iPod touch. Depending on the condition of the iPod's dock connector, it is possible for one USB cable to work while another does not work. If the problem is not on the USB cable side of the connection, it is more likely that the dock connector on the iPod touch is faulty and not making a data connection.
