Launchpad VS. using the Dock?

I'm curious as to the best way to use Launchpad. Is it just another way to access applications other then the Dock or my Applications folder? Is there an advantage of using Launchpad over the Dock? Is the idea that if you use Launchpad you can hide the dock and just not use it?

Thanks.

There is another way, which is the fastest way but the least used by users: Spotlight, the OS X search service.

To use Spotlight, press Command and Space keys, and type the name of the app you are looking for. Choose it in the list and open it. This also works for all types of files and mails. See > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2531?viewlocale=en_US

In the dock:

To create the stack, go to Mac HD/Applications. Create a new folder and give it a name.

Create Aliases (right click>make alias) for each app you want in the stack and add them to the folder.
Drag the folder of aliases to your dock ON THE RIGHT SIDE of the divider. Set the view options per the aforementioned instructions.
