I need to turn off iCloud for pages to keep my files local, how can I keep my documents?

I need to turn off icloud for my pages app so I can keep my files local and work on them when not connected to the net. When I turn of icloud for the sop, the docs disappear. Can I keep my docs local and turn of Icloud or copy them locally and only back them up to Icloud?
