Calendar production in iPhoto - does anyone know how I could tag a photo to show whether it's been used in previous years?

I'm in my 5th year of producing a calendar in iPhoto - does anyone know how I can tag previously used photos to avoid having to physically check back through hard copies?

MacBook Air, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5)

Create a keyword for each year and then add that keyword to the photos as necessary with the Keyword pane.
