Q: A pop up told me I needed to power down my laptop and restart it.

I was on the computer and out of no where a pop up came up saying I needed to shut the laptop down and power it back up. I couldn't do anything but power it down, my screen was frozen. What is that from? What caused it?

Looking at that it just is mentioning updates. Should I be concerned and back everything up on an external hard drive?

If you are fond of the data on your Mac, yes you should have backups, but that is unrelated to the kernel panic. It should be diagnosed and addressed. If you need help doing that, post the entire text of the kernel panic report in a reply.

Is the kernel panic report the diagnoses reading on the computer? Is this the right part I need?

Yes, that is the beginning of the kernel panic report. There is more - please post the rest.

It is always a good idea to restart your computer after you download any program or application. This allows your mac to reset itself and allows the application to finish downloading the applications. When you don't restart the system the applications will oftentimes not work properly.

Uninstall Sophos according to its instructions. Verify all its remnants are completely eradicated from your Mac, then determine if the kernel panics subside.

"Anti-virus" utilities are superfluous on a Mac and only cause trouble.
