Dec 7, 2013 12:01 PM in response to BruceDravisby BruceDravis,We have updated the software on the Apple TV; updated software on both of our MacBooks. We have turned the Apple TV off and then turned it back on. We have turned our MacBooks off and back on. The supposed automatic icon showing Airplay does not appear and it distresses me a great deal.

Dec 7, 2013 12:30 PM in response to BruceDravisby Joseph Kriz,Almost all machines from Mid-2011 should work.
Have you gone into your System Preferences / Displays and made sure the box below is checked?
Show mirroring options ?
You might also try restarting your computer and reset the PRAM by holding down the Command/Option/P/R keys until the machine reboots itself a couple of times.
Maybe that will help on your computers.

Dec 7, 2013 12:54 PM in response to Joseph Krizby BruceDravis,I do not get a box that says show mirroring options. There is a box in the position that you show, but it says "Show displays in menu bar." It also does not have a menu that allows you to choose on Air Play Display

And there's the problem.
AirPlay Mirroring requires Mountain Lion (10.8) or higher.

Dec 7, 2013 6:19 PM in response to diesel vdubby Joseph Kriz,Good one.
I missed that.
His computers will run Mavericks.
I think he may have to decide whether he wants to upgrad to Mavericks for FREE or not.
Pretty much a no brainer for most of us.
This page from Apple should also say, MUST HAVE MOUNTAIN LION OR LATER.........

Dec 8, 2013 6:28 AM in response to Joseph Krizby BruceDravis,Now, if I have just recently run updates on my software--literally, yesterday--why do I not have version 8.0?
Is my computer unable to support 8.0?
And I know nothing about Mavericks, but I do know that changing OS means that everything that "should work" is going to get screwed up in ways that nobody thought about beforehand, so I would like not to change OS unless I absolutely have to. What is going on with 2 different OS and why would I want--or not want--to have Mavericks?

Dec 8, 2013 6:28 PM in response to BruceDravisby Joseph Kriz,You can go directly to Mavericks 10.9 for free.
Why update to Mavericks? Security updates among other updates and keeping up with many other changes you may or may not need now, but again, it's free.
You could also use Airplay from your MacBook Pro which would be an upgrade you would use.
Otherwise, you won't have Airplay mirroring on your MacBook Pro.
Good luck however you decide.
