Q: how can i erase all content once my service is off?

i would like to recycle phone. my service has been turned off. when i follow the directions, general/reset/erase all content and settings it prompts me to enter my apple password, then it says "verification failed - the internet connection appears to be offline. Is there no way to erase you content once your service is off so that you can recycle your phone?

It's asking you to sign in because you most likely have find my iPhone turned on. If you can connect to WiFi, I'd suggest turning off find my iPhone by going to Settings>iCloud>find my iPhone. Turn it off and go to Settings>General>Reset>Erase all content and setting. That will fix the issue.

If you can't resolve you issue using wifi, try http://support.apple.com/kb/PH2702
Follow the steps to remove an ios device you no longer have
