iOS 4.2.1 older app version

I have an iphone 3g, and I restored it because I had a problem with it. before the restore, if i would download an app that wasn't compatible woth ios 4.2.1, it would ask me to download an older version. But after the restore it doesn't ask it anymore and it just says the app is incompatible, so I can't download the majority of the apps!

Is there any way to force the 'download older version' prompt? I don't want to reset it again, because I just got all my data back on it.

Thanks in advance

But take for example facebook. i downloaded it yesterday, to test if it would prompt me, and it did, but just after the restore it stopped asking me. It just said the app was incomatible. So I could download an older version of facebook just fine before the restore, but now it doesn't ask to install an older version.

Can't I force it to ask me to download an older version?
