How do I know what version of Java I have?
Mac mini, Mac OS X (10.6.8)
I'm guessing, but do they use Java as part of their page programming? I would guess you do not have Java installed on your computer.
Apple Java for Mac OS X 10.6 Update 17. Also, open Security preferences in Safari to be sure you have Java enabled.
I do have Java enabled, but I have Java Applet Plug-In 13.9.8. Should I download the latest version?
I just went on Safari and everything works there. It just doesn't work with Firefox. Should I still download the newest Java version?
No. Your problem is using Firefox. It has nothing to do with the plug-in. It's simply not active or not installed in Firefox. Use Safari.

Do you have Always Activated enabled in the Firefox add ons Manager?
Yes, I do. Do you think Safari is a better browser than Firefox?
I went to Cox mail in Safari and now the same thing is happening with Safari. This is getting frustrating. Now should I download the newest Java Applet Plug-In?
Install the update, then in Safari's prefs->Security->enable Java and see if you can access Cox's e-mail. If so, then select Manage Website Settings and select allow for Cox.
I installed the update, I think, but I can't find it anywhere. Everything is the same. When I go to tools in Firefox, it still shows the old version. What should I do now?
If you have installed the update, this in the Terminal app will show the version.
java -version
On my machine, that's:
java version "1.6.0_65"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_65-b14-462-10M4609)
Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 20.65-b04-462, mixed mode)
Where would I find this?
Find what? The Terminal is an app inside /Applications/Utilities/. Enter the command into the window that pops up, press the return key, and read the results.
I don't have a Terminal app under Applications/Utilities.
Are you sure you're looking in /Macintosh HD/Applications/Utilities/? if so, then, rerinstall the OS.
