10.6.8 freezes periodically on MBP 3,1

Dear all, I am hoping someone could shed some light on an issue that I've been having for the past two days...

To start, this is my system spec:

-MacBook Pro 3,1 - 2,2GHz C2D, 4GB RAM (upgraded 3 months ago), 64GB SSD (Crucial M4 - upgraded 1+ year ago), 6-month-old NewerTech replacement battery

-OS X 10.6.8, up-to-date software updates

The problem is the following:

Since about 2 days ago, I've been experiencing periodic freezes. They come in a variety of forms, but fit into two categories - (a) a complete freeze, where nothing is occurring (not even the beach ball is spinning), or (b) a "partial" freeze, where everything except for the Safari windows that I have open freezes - I can use those normally for a while more, even move between them, before even they become unresponsive after a few minutes. In both, the fans start to spool-up after about a minute.

I considered all the changes to the system that I had done in the past days, and all I could think of was the installation of the GarminCommunicator plug-in for Safari (where the installation did not work, or rather, it worked, but the element was not recognized), which I subsequently removed completely (from the Library/Internet Plug-ins folder), as per Garmin's instructions. The other idea was that it could be malware, but a deep scan of the system with ClamX antivirus showed nothing.

After the freeze happened the first time (after closing VLC with an mkv file still playing), I kept the Activity Monitor open, and watched it as a later crash happened, and there seemed to be no unusual behaviour - no task taking up a significant amount of CPU to warrant the spooling-up of the fan.

This all comes after the weeks before (at least 3) I've had some issues with the battery, where the charge would not show in the taskbar, there would only be an X in the battery, despite it being charged, and working as usual (plug-in, charge, battery life as expected, etc.). After contacting NewerTech I did a reset of the SMC, which did the trick. I mention this only because it was the only other issue that I had with the computer in the past 2 years since my HDD failed.

Thanks for your attention!

Even though you've given us a good bit of infomation about your setup, you really haven't given enough about your issues.

You mentioned freezes and crashes. Can you post a "hang" or "crash" report in order to home in on what the computer was doing at these times please.

Also download and run EtreCheck to give us an even better idea of your setup. I realize it's for Lion and above, but should report at least some useful information to you. Copy and paste the results back here.

Thanks for the reply!

I did forget to mention yesterday, that after a freeze, the only solution is a hard reboot by pressing down the power key. Also, neither via shortcut, nor by clicking on the menu option for "Force Quit" does the window appear.

1. The /Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports folder doesn't contain any recent files - the latest one is from 5 days ago, before these issues began. Where could I find hang reports? However, when looking at the system.log today after a recent crash, I noticed the entry below. I don't know if it means anything...

09.12.13 10:32:06[0x0-0x12012].com.apple.Safari[214]posix_spawn fatal error: 9!

There is no other report on this (or anything else for that matter) occurring around the same time.

2. From EtreCheck, below are the results that I get.

Thanks again!

I did find something new during the latest crash, only a few minutes ago.

It was another "partial crash", where I could use Safari - which is why I didn't even realize that everything else is unresponsive. What I noticed now is two things: first, during a crash, all the search history in Safari's built-in Google search disappears; and second, I cannot access this website (discussions.apple.com) and gmail - all other websites that I frequent were working normally. The error that I got for those was (I'm translating from German) something along the lines of "The website could not be shown because the server has dropped the connection".

However, this time the error from my previous post (point 1) was not logged in system.log. This time it was this:

09.12.13 11:45:42[0x0-0x16016].com.apple.Safari[229]FlateDecode: decoding error: incorrect data check.

Dec 11, 2013 3:53 AM in response to MadMacs0

I just wanted to post a final update, in the hopes of getting some help.

During one of the crashes, I pressed the Command-Option-Escape combination, to see if I can get Safari terminated. What came up on my internal monitor (the one connected to the DVI was as it was, only no movement) was a black "kernel screen", with error messages scrolling, but a few being repeated (there is no entry of this in the system.log):

1.

disk0s2: media is not present.

0 [Level 3] [ReadUID 0] [Facility com.apple.system.fs] [ErrType IO] [ErrNo 6] [IOType Write] [PBlkNum (different numbers each time)] [LBlkNum (different numbers each time as well)] ...

2.

CODE SIGNING: cs_invalid_page(0x10006x000): p=577[sh] clearing CS_VALID

So now I begin suspecting a hard drive failure. But running "fsck -fy" in Single User Mode reports no errors, and the same goes for SMART Utility.

TG0D is for Logic board GPU Die temperature, so far as I'm aware, although that model's book shows all these : TC0D, TC0P, TG0P, TG0T, TG0D, Th0H as 'Main logic board'

Fan sensors are TG0H & Th2H.

While the fans or cooling may be at fault, I'd say that the code suggests a problem with the graphics chip, possibly caused by poor cooling, However, the disk0s2: media is not present. does seem like a drive issue... do you have an external to boot from or one to replace it with ?.

Thank you for the information. I did some more searching, and it seems that this is a common error to be found on MBP 3,1's that have had their logic board replaced due to the faulty NVidia GPU's (8600M). Mine was replaced about a year into having it, which means about 5 years ago now. Now, my question is, can AHT somehow be made to ignore this error and continue testing?

I do have an external drive that I could try booting from, yes. However, running all possible tests on the internal drive, and not getting any errors, am I wrong to assume an issue with the logic board?

However, having read the issues with this specific type of SSD (Crucial M4), I think my first step will be to update the firmware (although the treshold for the dreaded "5200-hour bug" has long been surpassed), and then to leave the drive with no reading/writing but powered on for a while - I've read about issues where deleted cells not being cleaned off the drive, which causes it to behave erradically. From what I understand these issues are the only ones that would not be picked up by SMART analysis tools and drive checkers.

Hi Ogelthorpe

I see that some Apple Hardware test files include a list of codes, and since that isn't part of a confidential Apple service document, there seems no reason that the lists can't be shared .
