Re: we had difficulty downloading episodes from your feed

Hi,

I'm having problems trying to submit my podcast to itunes. My website URL is http://rawstorylife.com and the feedburner feed that I've tried to submit to itunes is http://feeds.feedburner.com/RawStoryLife . When I tried to submit this feed to iTunes it says "we had difficulty downloading episodes from your feed." So I'm not sure how I can change things so that iTunes will accept the feed?

When I put this feed into Feed Validator this is what it says:

Congratulations!

User uploaded file This is a valid RSS feed.

This feed is valid, but interoperability with the widest range of feed readers could be improved by implementing the following recommendations.

I use Wordpress "Thesis Theme" so I'm wondering if I need to have a separate feed specifically for podcasts? Maybe that's part of the trouble with the feed? I would appreciate any tips or advice you could send my way so I can successfully submit my podcast to iTunes:)

thanks so much,

Lorna

The feed seems to be OK - it can be subscribed to in iTunes and the one episode that has playable media shows and downloads. I can see no reason why there should be a problem with it: Robert Walch has reported that sometime the Store doesn't work properly on submissions - it was doing this last Sunday so perhaps it's a weekend blues thing. I should give it a day and try again.

In the meantime you would do better to have a specifically podcast feed. Having a feed with a few podcast episodes and a lot of episodes which don't have playable media is going to run you into problems soner or later. The non-playable episodes don't show in iTunes.

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly Roger:) I'm glad the feed seems ok. So far I only have one Podcast episode available...I just wanted to be able to get things figured out and submitted to iTunes before I had too many episdoes available.

I'll try to submit the feed again in a few days. Maybe I should burn a different feed in feedburner...one that is exclusively for podcasts? I've set 2 different categories in my Wordpress website...one for blogposts and the other one for podcasts. So if I started a new feed specifically for podcasts that would probably be much better. Still new at this..but I'll try to figure out how to get the specific feed going in feedburner.

Then I'll try the new feed in iTunes in a day or two. Thanks again,

Lorna

Hi again,

So I checked out this new feed that I burned in Feedburner specifically for podcasts. The URL is "http://feeds.feedburner.com/rawstorylifepodcasts" and when I checked it in feedvalidator.org it said "this is a valid rss feed" but then there were some issues like these:

Congratulations!

User uploaded file This is a valid RSS feed.

Do these need to be fixed in order to get my podcast submitted to iTunes? If so, do you have any links or helpful advice on how I can fix these? I did go to itunes and click under "file" down to the tab "subscribe to a podcast" and put my new URL in there and it seemed to work...but I haven't actually tried to submit this as a podcast yet to iTunes...I wanted to hear what you had to say about these errors first:)

thanks for your help,

Lorna

I tried it and everything was fine...except for the category. It said Health with sub-category "sexualtiy". So I went back to my Feedburner "smartcast" feed to double check what I had written in there and I had Health with sub-category "self-help" just like I had orginally intended. So I saved it again and tried again in iTunes. Still the same thing came up. Do you have any ideas on how I can fix this...before I complete the submission to iTunes?

thanks,

Lorna

I'm not sure where I put the tags for feedburner? Here's what I put in the Optimize and then "SmartCast" settings:

  • Create podcast enclosures from links to
    • Category: » Subcategory:
    • Use additional categories
    • Podcast image location:
      Preview Image...
    • Podcast subtitle:
    • Podcast summary:
    • Podcast search keywords:
    • Podcast author email address:
User uploaded file
This service is active

Sorry it didn't come up in the sub-category like I put it in the feed ...when I double-checked just now it said "self-help" ...I filled out the Podcast summary, title and keywords...but they didn't show up when I "copied and pasted" ;( Which section do I go to tag the podcast in feedburner? And are there specific words I should use?(My podcast is about helping people work through obstacles and to make everyday a better story in their life....that's the tagline I use...and most of the time I'm interviewing people).

thanks again for any tips you might have:)

I saw the word "sexuality" in the sub-category when I submitted my Podcast feed to iTunes...when I clicked "continue" to go to the next page I saw the picture of the "Raw Story Life" podcast and then the Description, etc. then when it said 'category' it said "Health" and in sub-category" it said "sexuality". I'm not sure why...but I'll try again.

Lorna,

The issue with it showing the wrong category when you submit - is an iTunes issue and not an issue with your feed.

After it is approved in about 3 to 5 days the correct category will show up - per what is in your feed.

So go ahead and submit even if in the preview it is showing you the wrong category.

Apple is aware of this bug - and is looking into it.
