Help with ATV and Airplay

I have a 13 inch Macbook Pro mid 2012 and Apple TV 3. My airplay will work fine through Itunes but I have no icon on my laptap where it should be. Airplay works fine with my iphone and ipad2. My networks are connected and all software is up to date. I have done everything the forums have suggested and scanned the internet for any clue as to why mirror imaging will not work outside of Itunes. The only thing I have come up with is through Airport express. I noticed my internet connection is recognized but it still says "No configured airport base stations have been found". I read a little about WDS and when I go through system prefences my network says WPA/WPA2. I am completely clueless on this one. Can anyone please help me?
