Q: configuring airport extreme

I have an airport extreme base station which I haven't used in several years.  I would like to make it work so that I can listen to iTunes on my remote station.

I have a network set up but I can't join it because it needs a WPA2 password.

If I set one up a password several years ago I don't remember it.

So I thought I could start from scatch using the airport utility and set up a new network but I get the error that "No configured airport base stations have been found. Airport utility will continue searching.

I seem to remember an airport Managers station but I don't seem to have one  I have down loaded all updates to my imac over the years that included some updates to airport.

Any help in getting me started will be appreciated.

What are the exact model numbers of each of the AirPort base stations that you will be using in your network?

There is no model number. There is only one Airport Extreme base station and it is used to transmit to a small white box that is connecteed to an electric outlet an then a cable is  plugged in to the aux port on a stereo to listen to itunes.   This was never connected to the internet although it was capable.  The unit and the two receivers I have were purchased in 2005.

The model number would be printed on a label on either the side or bottom of the base station. An example would be: A1084.

Does the "small white box" look like the following:

How about the Extreme? Which of the two does it look like:

    1. AEBS Ports.png

    or

    2. MC340.jpeg

The picture of the small white box is very accurate and the airport extreme shown as numnber 1 is also the correct one.  and I did findthe mkdel number in very small print.  I unplugged it and used a magnifiying glass.

    It is model A103

    Thanks For the Help

Ok, it looks like that both of your AirPort base stations are the older 802.11g models. Both of these do support WPA2 for wireless encryption.

However, you are going to run into a problem trying to administer either of them from your iMac if it is running OS X Mountain Lion. That is because this version of OS X does not support version 5.x of the AirPort Utility that would be required to configure these older base station.

However, a workaround would be to use either another Mac that is running an older OS X version or to use a Windows-based PC to do the base station administration.

Assuming that you got that worked out, check out the following Apple Support article on how to configure the AirPort Express for iTunes streaming.

I went to the apple store yesterday and bought a new airport extreme. because I found out from Apple Support that the old dome(space ship) base station was not supported anymore.  So was unable to set up the base station and agian called support.

The pwerson on  the other end helped me work out the kinks in the network and advised me to take the base station to my stereo receiver where I wanted to plug it into the auxilary port to p[lay iTunes in My Kitchen.   so now that is working and I can listen to music in my kitchen but now I wonder if IO have to replace all the little hubs I had on other stereo boxes in my living room and bedroom.

I have the small whit boxes on each stereo that is ahead of number 1.

I assumed the base system sent out the signal and the little white boxes received the signal and fed it into the aux port on my stereo.  But i Must be mistaken.

    Thanks For The Help

Yes, you would need to use an AirPort Express base station at each location that you want to stream iTunes to. The older 802.11g base stations will still work in this manner but, as you aleady know, you won't be able to administer them.

I removed the old 802.112g  in the kitchen  and replaced it with the New Base  ZStation .  All the other stereos that have the older small hub (i assume it is and 802.11g)  I have never had a part number for it.

But they are all blinking yellow which says they are not receiving the music from itunes.

Not necessarily. A flashing amber LED indicates that some additional configuration changes are needed. I suggest that you use the AirPort Utility to determine what the issue(s) is/are for each base station.
