1. You are not running OSX 10.5.8
2. You have 2 versions of Pages on your Mac, the older version in Applications/iWork folder and Pages 5 in your Apliactions folder.
3. You need to open the right version for your file.

how do you do that??
Thank you, that worked.
mine keeps saying i need a newer operating system, so i try to update the mac book and it says it is up to date!! this is most frustrating
What version of OSX do you have?
Pages 5 needs OSX 10.9 Maverick.
Peter
Ok, so I've got OSX !0.9 Mavericks, and Pages 5. I have same problem...have a doc on the desktop that will not open and being told that I must downlatest version of Pages...WHICH I ALREADY HAVE SO WHAT'S UP WITH THIS?
Pages 5 is in Applications folder. Pages 09 is in Applications/iWork 09 folder. The icons for Pages on the Dock or in the Launch pad are probably linked Pages 09.
Are you launching Pages from an icon in your Dock? Installing the update does not change the Dock icons & it does not remove the older versions. Go to your Applications folder & launch the new Pages from there then right-click on the Dock icon & select Options > Keep in Dock.
Installing new versions of iWork has never replaced existing versions. This is nothing new. The only thing new is that the '09 apps are moved to an iWork '09 folder if they were purchased from the Mac App Store. If they were installed from disk they should already be in a separate folder in Applications.
