System Preferences > Bluetooth. Turn Bluetooth Off. Under Devices listing, click once on the particular keyboard entry. Click the X to the right to remove it. Select Show Bluetooth in menu bar. Under Advanced, check all three buttons and click OK.

Put freshly charged batteries in the Bluetooth keyboard you want to pair. If it has an on/off switch, turn it on, and then also renable Turn Bluetooth On in the above bluetooth preference pane, and it will scan for the Bluetooth keyboard, which you can now name as your own.

Many thanks this only solved part of it. in osx 10.9 as you say go into system preferences click on Bluetooth highlight the keyboard this was as far as it goes because there is no + or - and no gear wheel in place of this you highlight the keyboard and then go to the right of the name with the pointer still on the highlight hold down the controll key and click the blank part of the highllight and a menu comes up and then youclick on name rename then let go of the controll key.clck the highlite click to close menu.then you are done.many hanks for pointing me in the right direction.Peter.
