Can't access photos on backup copy of Snow Leopard version iPhoto on my Mavericks equipped new MBPr; "no permissions"


What do I do to gain access to import the images?

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X Mavericks (10.9)

I appreciate that response; however, in my case, I have transfered two sets of photos. Each one from a different iMac that runs Snow Leopard.


Using my Mavericks MBPr, I cannot see the contents of these two different folders that now are in an external hard drive.


I haven't imported them using iPhoto, because I wanted to avoid importing lots of duplicates.


Using the MBPr, when I tried to view the contents of the folders, the two folders have a red minus sign on them. When I try to open them, a message says I have no access, because I do not have permissions.


What's interesting is that using one of the iMacs, it has access to the content of the folders!


I tried repairing permissions on the MBP, but nothing changed.
