Can my new MacBook Pro print wirelessly via Airport Extreme?

I have a new MacBook Pro (early 2013, running Mountain Lion), an Airport Extreme (early 2011) and an old HP LaserJet printer (circa 2003).

My wife's old MacBook (early 2008, running Lion) can print wirelessly to the HP, setting it up with Bonjour. I, however, cannot see or set up the HP for wireless printing. Apple Support tells me the newer Macs only use 'AirPrint' for wireless printing -- so if the printer isn't AirPrint-enabled, I can't print to it. I find this incredible. If the Airport can make a printer wireless-capable, why can't we all print to it?

Is there any way I can work around this problem, other than A) plugging directly into the HP printer; or B) buying a new printer? Please advise, thanks.
