unable to boot up

Rebooted after uninstalling some software, but the system would not come back up. It went right into disk utility multiple times. I did a disk repair and permission repair while in there. Since I was unable to remember my Apple ID, I was forced to restore the backup from Time Machine. Still, after the complete restore, the system wouldn't boot up and went into disk utility. In the meantime, I accessed thee online help and was able to reset my Apple ID password, but now I get an error when I try to reload Mountain Lion. Restarts don't work either. I don't know how I can be online if my system doesn't completely come up?? Other symptoms for past few days include repeated lock ups and DVD player not reading media. Does anybody have any suggestions?
