Q: My 2013 MBP will not connect to password-protected wifi networks.

My 2013 MBP will not connect to any password-protected wifi. Networks that do not require passwords work fine.

While installing an update last week my computer crashed and rebooted before fully completing the update. When it rebooted the computer started as if no update was in progress. This may be related, although the issue did not begin until a few days later. Im currently running OS X 10.8.5

I've googled the issue and tried every tourbleshooting tip. I manually configured the DHCP, renewed the DHCP lease, used my MAC address as my Client ID, created a DNS server as 8.8.8.8. and deleted all networks from my preferred networks list. This is in addition to the obvious restarts and reboots of the wifi and my computer.

I also ran network diagnostics, but all it told me is that I was unable to connect.

The issue is definitely on my end since it is consistent across any password-protected wifi.

Any ideas what the issue might be? I would like to avoid a genius bar trip if at all possible.

    Try the basics first:

Change your router channel number.  Most times this works & is all you have to do.

Disconnect & reconnect your modem.  unplug it for about 10 seconds.  Plug it back in.  Do the same for Apple’s routers.  Wait for everything to reboot.

    System Preferences>Network

    Click the Assist Me button.

In the next window that pops up, click the Diagnostic button & do the necessary.

Research Knowledge Base for network problems that pertain to the OS that is currently installed on your computer.   See these basic networking KB Articles:  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1401 AirPort troubleshooting guide

It's not one router I have issue with. It's every router that requires a password. I've tried 5 different ones in different locations and it's always the same. Non-protected networks function normaly.

I've tried most if not all the steps in all of those articles. Running the network diagnostic does nothing but tell me that I cant connect to the wifi network in question. It lists a wrong password as the solution, and I know the passwords are correct.

New symptom: When running the network setup under "Assist Me" it claims the wifi passphrase is incorrect. I know that it is definitely correct, and the security mode matches (WPA2 personal). I tried changing the security mode to WPA/WPA2 Personal on the router with no luck.
